## Summary

Open multimodal LLMs usually trail proprietary systems such as GPT-4o. Their architectures are rarely compared under equal conditions, and they typically lose text-only skill after vision-language training. NVIDIA's NVLM 1.0 addresses all three issues with three variants trained on one shared, carefully curated data mix:

- **NVLM-D:** decoder-only, in the LLaVA style.
- **NVLM-X:** cross-attention, in the Flamingo style.
- **NVLM-H:** a new hybrid meant to pair training efficiency with stronger multimodal reasoning.

High-resolution images are split into dynamic tiles, and a 1-D tile-tagging scheme marks them, which notably improves OCR and reasoning results. The authors find that data quality and task diversity matter more than raw volume, even during pretraining. They add a high-quality text-only SFT set and much multimodal math data to training. As a result, the 72B models compete with leading proprietary and open systems on vision-language benchmarks and even beat their text backbone on math and coding. The work shows that a single openly released model can handle both modalities without sacrificing text ability.

## Key points

- All three 72B variants are built on Qwen2-72B-Instruct. Weights for NVLM-D 72B are published on Hugging Face (nvidia/NVLM-D-72B), and the training code is promised.
- On MMLU, GSM8K, MATH and HumanEval, NVLM-D 1.0 72B raises the average from 79.8 (backbone) to 84.1, a gain of 4.3. NVLM-X gains 2.5 points and NVLM-H gains 2.7.
- Open competitors lose about 6–7 points of text accuracy versus their backbones, e.g. VILA-1.5 40B drops from 54.8 to 47.9. LLaVA-OneVision 72B and InternVL-2-Llama3-76B show similar declines.
- Llama 3-V avoids text degradation by freezing its LLM. For NVLM-X 72B, freezing hurts vision-language scores, especially OCR-heavy ones: OCRBench falls to 722 versus 828 unfrozen, and AI2D to 76.2 versus 84.2.
- Evaluation covers MMMU, MathVista, OCRBench, AI2D, ChartQA, DocVQA, TextVQA, RealWorldQA and VQAv2.
