## Summary
Neural abstractive summarizers write fluent text, but they often choose the wrong content. Pointer-generator models in particular tend to copy whole source sentences. Gehrmann, Deng and Rush address this with a two-stage design inspired by bottom-up attention in image captioning.

First, a separate content selector labels each source token by whether it is likely to appear in the summary. The selector is a bidirectional LSTM tagger built on GloVe and ELMo embeddings. Its training labels come from automatically aligning reference summaries to their documents. At decoding time, the selector's output acts as a mask: a standard pointer-generator may copy only selected tokens, though it can still generate any word.

This simple, MLE-trained pipeline beats the See et al. (2017) baseline on CNN-DM and NYT. It matches or exceeds reinforcement-learning systems, and it outperforms end-to-end variants that use multi-task learning or a differentiable mask. Because the selector needs very little data, a summarizer can be adapted to a new domain cheaply, which matters for low-resource settings.

## Key points
- On CNN-DM, ROUGE-L rises from 36.4 (pointer-generator baseline) to 38.3. Overall gains exceed two ROUGE points on both CNN-DM and NYT.
- The content selector reaches over 60% recall and over 50% precision. It can be trained on less than 1% of the original data.
- In domain transfer, a CNN-DM model evaluated on NYT improves by more than 5 ROUGE-L points with a selector trained on only 1,000 in-domain sentences.
- Copying makes outputs highly extractive. Novel words make up 14.8% of reference summaries, 2.2% of pointer-generator output and about 0.5% with bottom-up attention. The mask breaks up long copied spans of 11+ words.
- Three inference-time penalties (length, coverage, trigram repeat) each improve all three ROUGE scores, even when stacked on the other two.
