## Summary
This is a short Spanish-language review by Rafael Ramón Guerrero of Daniel King's 2010 Brill volume. King's book edits, translates into English and comments on the oldest known Syriac rendering of Aristotle's *Categories*. The reviewer places the book in a long line of scholarship. That work shows that Syriac Christians translated Aristotle's logic well before the better-known Greek-to-Arabic translation movement. The line runs from Assemani in the 18th century through Renan, Baumstark and Furlani to Hugonnard-Roche and Brock. King argues the text matters in three ways. It preserves a form of the Greek older than any surviving manuscript. It shows a beginner philosopher trying to express Aristotelian logic in a Semitic language. It also opens a transmission chain that later reached the Arab and Latin worlds. His introduction covers several topics: the Syriac Aristotle, the Syriac *Categories*, translation technique, how the versions relate, and their value for the critical text. The reviewer praises the book's balance, since it avoids overstating the Syriac role. He also notes that the English translation lets readers who do not know Syriac reach this material.

## Key points
- The book was published in Leiden by Brill in 2010 and has 327 pages. The review was printed in volume 29 (2012) of the Spanish journal whose title translates as *Annals of the Seminar on the History of Philosophy*.
- The book completes Khalil Georr's 1948 Beirut study of the Syro-Arabic *Categories*. Georr edited al-Hasan ibn Suwâr's edition of Ishâq ibn Hunayn's (d. 910) Arabic version.
- Hugonnard-Roche is credited with showing that Arabic logical vocabulary relied heavily on the early Syriac translators.
- King traces Syriac Aristotle studies back to the 5th century. He rejects the claim that they were unrelated to the Christological controversies after 431.
- The reviewer sets the book against Gouguenheim's disputed 2008 *Aristote au Mont-Saint-Michel*. A Renan note adds that Syriac scholars concentrated on the early Organon: the *Isagoge*, the *Categories* and *Peri Hermeneias*.

## Interesting ideas
- An early translation can serve as an independent witness to a source text older than any surviving copy, so translations become evidence and not just derivatives. — For Mova (learn): when silver trees disagree, a parse of a paraphrase or translation could act as an extra witness for the original sentence's structure.
- King analyses how a novice coined technical terms in a language structurally unlike Greek, and how that vocabulary later fed Arabic logic. Term lineage can thus be traced across languages. — For Mova (world): ontology entries from WordNet and Wikidata could record where a concept label came from, so mappings between languages stay explainable.
- One chapter of the book studies how the different versions relate to each other and where each came from. Deciding which version derives from which helps judge each version's reliability. — For Mova (learn): witness parsers could be grouped by shared training origin, so that agreement between related parsers is not counted as independent confirmation.
- The edition pairs the original text with a translation and a running commentary, so that a reader without the source language can still follow the reasoning. — For Mova (back): text → graph → text output could carry a commentary layer explaining each rendering choice, in line with the explainability goal.
