## Summary
Hudson surveys scholarship on the genetic classification of Ethiopia's Semitic languages. His goal is to give prehistorians a usable overview of the period just before written records. He treats classification as a family-tree reconstruction of how languages diverged, and he defends that model against the diffusion ("wave") view. He lays out the received scheme, in which Ethiopian Semitic is grouped with South Arabian under South Semitic. He then reviews linguistic work up to 1967 and newer proposals, checking each against archaeology and cultural history. His conclusion is that the dominant account fits the evidence poorly: Semitic speech, it holds, reached Ethiopia with South Arabian migrants as late as roughly 700 B.C. Several facts are easier to explain if the split happened much earlier:
- the strong internal diversity of the languages;
- Cushitic influence reaching into syntax and morphology;
- shared roots with Northern Semitic;
- archaic Proto-Semitic traits in Gurage and Ge'ez;
- the cultural unity across Ethiopia.

Hudson suggests that Ethiopia should again be considered a candidate Semitic homeland. This matters because, as he argues, language trees are among the few reliable tools for reconstructing prehistory.

## Key points
- Following Greenberg (1957), a genetic classification has three properties: it is non-arbitrary (only one is correct), it is exhaustive, and each language belongs to exactly one group.
- Afro-Asiatic is treated as having six branches, with Omotic split off from Cushitic following Fleming (1969). Semitic divides into North (North-east/Akkadian, North-west) and South. South Semitic divides into South-west (Arabic) and South-east (Ethiopian plus South Arabian).
- Proto-Semitic is placed at least at 5000–4000 B.C. The author argues it must have been spoken in a small area, because wide uniformity was impossible given ancient communication.
- Ethiopian Semitic comprises more than twelve distinct languages, and all but three are spoken in central Ethiopia. The Gurage cluster alone shows at least a three-way branching.
- Levine (1971) lists pan-Ethiopian cultural traits that cross the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic boundaries. Examples include the Zar cult, avoiding fish as food, phallic stone monuments, and the significance of the central house pole.

## Interesting ideas
- Shared archaic features between Akkadian and Ethiopian were judged by Cantineau and Leslau to be independent developments, not evidence of a close grouping, which separates real common innovations from coincidental similarity. — For Mova (learn): When several witness parsers agree, check whether they share a common bias before counting their agreement as independent evidence for silver data.
- Following Goodenough, an inference is ranked first by whether it fits all reliable evidence, and only second by whether it is plausible. — For Mova (answer): Readers could rank candidate answers by consistency with every fact in the text world first, and use prior plausibility only to break ties, with both scores kept explainable.
- Hudson exposes a contradiction in the old theory: borrowing intense enough to explain the Cushitic influence should have made the Semitic languages more alike, yet they are very diverse. Testing a hypothesis by deriving two of its consequences and checking them against each other is a strong sanity check. — For Mova (world): Each event-ordering or state hypothesis could have its secondary implications derived and cross-checked, so that internally inconsistent world models are flagged.
- The paper notes a bias: Proto-Semitic was reconstructed mostly from the best-known languages (Hebrew, Arabic), so features found elsewhere were wrongly labelled deviations. — For Mova (tree): When converting UD dialects or treebanks, avoid treating the most familiar treebank's conventions as the norm and others as noise; record the differences as alternatives instead.
- Hudson reframes features shared with a sister group as possibly inherited retentions reinforced by contact, rather than explaining each as a separate borrowing. — For Mova (tokens): For lemma and morphology rules, prefer one general inherited pattern with explicit exceptions over many item-by-item special cases, which keeps the analysis more compact and explainable.
