## Summary
The authors ask whether an LLM-based system can carry out a full hypothesis-testing study by itself while staying transparent and checkable. They built data-to-paper, a platform that moves LLM agents and rule-based agents through a fixed sequence of research steps. These steps cover data exploration, goal and hypothesis formulation, analysis planning, code writing and debugging, table creation, literature retrieval and section-by-section writing. Every step runs as its own conversation and receives only selected earlier outputs. Each output passes through rule-based checks and an LLM reviewer, with optional human comments. Because information flow is controlled this way, every number in the final paper can be traced back to the code that produced it. In autopilot mode, given only annotated public datasets, the system wrote complete manuscripts. Their originality was modest, but most were analytically sound. For simple fixed goals, roughly 80–90% of runs reproduced published findings without major errors. Harder goals needed a human co-pilot. The work suggests that automating research can increase verifiability rather than reduce it.

## Key points
- **Workflow:** The pipeline has 17 steps and uses OpenAI ChatGPT models (gpt-3.5-turbo variants and gpt-4). Citations come from the Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API, and the final PDF carries an AI watermark.
- **Open-goal datasets:** Two datasets were used. "Health Indicators" is a BRFSS 2015 subset with 253,680 responses and 22 features. "Social Network" is a Twitter interaction graph of the 117th US Congress.
- **Open-goal results:** Five autopilot runs per dataset (about one hour each) produced 10 papers. Eight had correct analyses with only small wording issues, and two contained fundamental errors.
- **Open-source models:** Llama 2 and CodeLlama hallucinated dataset features and often failed to converge during coding, so they could not complete full research cycles.
- **Availability:** Code is at github.com/Technion-Kishony-lab/data-to-paper.
