## Summary
Large language models rarely fix their own mistakes when they get no outside feedback, a setting called intrinsic self-correction. Earlier training recipes for this needed extra models, a stronger teacher, or added supervision. Google DeepMind researchers propose SCoRe, a multi-turn online reinforcement learning method. It trains a single model to answer and then revise its answer, using only data the model generates itself. The authors first show why supervised fine-tuning on offline correction traces, such as STaR-style training, falls short. In some cases the errors in the training data differ from the ones the model actually makes (distribution shift). In others the model learns to give its best first answer and then barely change it (behavior collapse). SCoRe avoids both problems with two stages. Stage I improves the second attempt while keeping the first attempt close to the base model. Stage II trains both attempts with a shaped reward that pays for improvement between turns. On Gemini models, SCoRe is the first method to show clearly positive intrinsic self-correction, so models can spend extra inference compute refining their own reasoning.

## Key points
- SCoRe raised the base models' self-correction by 15.6 points (absolute) on MATH and 9.1 points on HumanEval, using Gemini 1.0 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash. It needs no oracle feedback, teacher model or separate refinement model.
- In the MATH ablation, full SCoRe went from 60.0% accuracy on the first attempt to 64.4% on the second, a gain of +4.4. Training for a single turn only made the second attempt worse (−2.4). Removing Stage I (+2.2) or the reward shaping (+2.6) shrank the gain.
- Replacing on-policy REINFORCE with STaR in Stage II lowered accuracy (58.4% on the second attempt). This suggests that training on the model's own fresh samples matters especially for multi-turn correction.
- With a budget of 32 samples per problem, spending part of it on one self-correction round beat pure parallel sampling with majority voting: a 10.5% gain versus 7.4%.
- Limitations: the model was trained for only one correction round because of infrastructure constraints. Stages I and II are still separate training runs.
