## Summary
When ChatGPT appeared, nobody had tested it systematically on standard academic NLP benchmarks. Its free-form conversational answers are hard to score automatically against gold labels. The authors ran a broad zero-shot evaluation covering 140 benchmark datasets and about 255K generated responses. The tasks included question answering, summarization, code generation, commonsense and mathematical reasoning, machine translation, bias, and ethics. Responses came first from the web interface and later from the gpt-3.5-turbo API. Classification-style outputs were checked by at least two human annotators, with majority voting, or by parsing scripts whose failures went to humans. Generative tasks were scored with ROUGE or BLEU.

ChatGPT is versatile and strong at open-domain knowledge, math, and coding, but it generally trails fine-tuned single-task SOTA models. It is also weak on several commonsense tasks and on underrepresented languages. The study also identifies a new ability, answering several unrelated questions in one prompt. This matters because it shows where ChatGPT-like models can be deployed reliably and argues that chat models need human-assisted evaluation.

## Key points
- Five leaderboards were covered: SuperGLUE, Big-Bench Hard, MMLU, the Ethics Benchmark, and Inverse Scaling tasks.
- **SuperGLUE (dev split):**
  - Zero-shot ChatGPT reached 87.0 on RTE, beating 1-shot PaLM-540B (78.7) and PaLM 2-L (79.3).
  - It outperformed zero-shot PaLM-540B on 5 of 8 datasets.
  - It scored 100 parity on AX-g and an MCC of 56.7 on AX-b.
- **Multi-query ability:** the authors call it "PolyQuery Synthesis." It appears mainly in instruction-tuned models (ChatGPT and the davinci-001/002/003 series), though accuracy usually drops slightly compared with single-question prompts.
- **Commonsense and summarization:**
  - On PIQA, SIQA, HellaSwag, and WinoGrande, ChatGPT lags PaLM 540B and LLaMA 65B.
  - Its summaries get lower ROUGE than SOTA models, yet human annotators preferred them, suggesting current metrics fall short.
- **Released resources:** prompts and responses are available at github.com/ntunlp/ChatGPT_Eval.
- **Caveats:** results may change between ChatGPT versions, and benchmark data may have leaked into OpenAI's undisclosed instruction-tuning data.
