## Summary
The article asks how elites on the edge of the Mittani Empire saw themselves. Mittani was a Hurrian-speaking power that held northern Iraq and Syria in the 15th–14th centuries BC. The question is whether these elites embraced imperial ideology, kept to local tradition, or combined the two. Lauinger tests this on the Statue of Idrimi from Alalah (Tell Atchana). Its first-person narrative tells the life of a king who ruled around 1450 BC, though the statue itself probably dates to 1400–1350 BC.

He first identifies the intended readers as Alalah's local nobility. He then shows that the narrative casts Idrimi as a maryannu, a noble chariot hero at ease in Mittani courts. On language, he follows Kathryn Medill: the inscription's irregular verbs form one coherent Northwest Semitic-Akkadian code, not traces of Hurrian.

The outcome is a split identity: an imperial ideal told in the linguistic rhythms of home. This mirrors the blend of central policy and local implementation seen in Mittani administration, and it sheds light on elite self-image in imperial peripheries.

## Key points
- The statue carries two texts: a 101-line body inscription and a 3-line cheek inscription. The cheek text is usually numbered as lines 102–104, but the author treats it separately (CI 1–3) as a frame for the body text.
- Mittani control varied by site:
  - Alalah had vassal kings bound by oath.
  - Halab (Aleppo) had its dynasty replaced by a governor (halzuhlu).
  - Baṣiru (Tell Bazi) dealt with the empire through a civic body, probably an assembly.
- The four-tier social scheme is shared by Alalah and Nuzi but uses different names at each site:
  - maryannu vs rākib narkabti
  - ehelle vs nakkušše
  - hupšu vs ālik ilki
  - haniahhe vs aššābu
- Medill (2019) links the inscription's odd forms to Canaano-Akkadian in the Levantine Amarna letters. Examples include a 3 m.pl. suffix -ūna on Akkadian bases, statives used as suffix-conjugation verbs, and hybrid forms such as irtīhat (EA 124).
- Some Alalah residents held "Hanigalbat-ness" (Hanigalbatūtu), a form of imperial citizenship that apparently exempted them from certain local obligations.

## Interesting ideas
- Instead of explaining each irregular verb form with its own ad hoc story, the analysis looks for one underlying code that accounts for all of them at once, which is a stronger and more testable explanation.
- The same administrative category appears at two sites under unrelated local labels, so the analyst keeps the shared structure separate from its local naming.
- A short text physically set apart from the main one (the cheek inscription) is read as a frame around the narrative, not as its continuation.
- The audience's values are inferred from two independent channels, what the story praises and which linguistic code it uses, and the tension between them is itself the finding.
- Hybrid words join a foreign affix to a native stem and still form a regular, analyzable system.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (learn): when inducing repair rules from parser errors, first cluster the failures and test whether a single register or dialect hypothesis covers them before writing case-by-case patches.
- **I2** (tree): in UD dialect conversion, keep one canonical relation and feature inventory and treat each treebank's labels as local surface names mapped onto it, rather than as separate categories.
- **I3** (world): mark titles, morals, and narrator asides in fables as framing material so they are not merged into the event timeline of the story world.
- **I4** (frames): treat register or code choice as a pragmatic signal separate from propositional content, so speaker stance can be read even when the two point in different directions.
- **I5** (tokens): let the morphology analyzer propose stem-plus-affix splits across lexical strata, such as non-standard or borrowed suffixes on English bases, instead of rejecting such words as unknown.
