## Summary
Research applying neural methods, and especially large language models, to mathematical proof has grown quickly. It now spans many tasks, datasets and evaluation practices with no unifying picture. This survey organizes more than 180 papers on deep learning for theorem proving into one framework. It covers both informal proving (natural-language mathematics) and formal proving, the latter including automated provers such as E, Vampire, Z3 and CVC5 and proof assistants such as Lean, Isabelle, Coq, HOL Light and Metamath.

The work is grouped into five task families: converting informal mathematics into formal statements (autoformalization), selecting relevant premises, producing individual proof steps, searching for complete proofs, and a residual category of other tasks. The authors also catalogue human-curated and synthetic datasets, review evaluation metrics and how state-of-the-art systems perform, and discuss open problems. These include data scarcity, results that are hard to compare across proof assistants, possible test-set contamination in pretrained LLMs, and few tools that working mathematicians can actually use.

The survey is useful as a single entry point for researchers new to the area. It also sets out a research agenda covering conjecturing, verified code generation and math education.

## Key points
- The survey covers over 180 papers. Yearly publications in the area rose from about 2 in 2016 to 45 in 2023, and growth continued into 2024 (counted up to July).
- A curated paper list is maintained at the DL4TP GitHub repository (github.com/zhaoyu-li/DL4TP).
- Autoformalization work has moved from seq2seq translation of LaTeX into Mizar to few-shot LLM approaches using PaLM, Codex and GPT-4. Examples include LeanEuclid for Euclidean geometry and DSP, which drafts informal proofs with Minerva, maps them to formal sketches and lets ATPs fill the gaps.
- On evaluation, miniF2F exists for several proof assistants, but automation tools can affect scores more than the neural model does. Isabelle's Sledgehammer, which Lean lacks, is one example. Time and attempt budgets can also reorder method rankings.
- Proposed future directions are AI-driven conjecturing, LLM-based verified code generation (Dafny, Verus, F*, Coq) and formal-math tutoring, for example with Lean Copilot.
