## Summary
Large language models store a great deal of knowledge in their weights, but they still fail to recall or apply some of it. This shows up as fabricated facts, being swayed by misleading context, and weak handling of vague questions. The authors argue that earlier notions of an LLM "knowledge boundary" fall short: the Know-Unknow Quadrant is informal, one formal definition is tied to a single model, and related surveys are either undefined or narrow.

This ACL 2025 survey proposes a formal framework of three nested boundaries (universal, parametric and outward) and derives a four-type knowledge taxonomy from them. It then organizes the literature around three questions:
- why boundaries matter, through the undesired behaviours they cause;
- how boundaries can be identified, using uncertainty estimation, calibration and probing;
- how the resulting problems can be mitigated, with strategies matched to each knowledge type.

It closes with open problems, including broader benchmarks, detectors that generalize across domains, side effects such as over-refusal, and long-form factuality. The framework gives the field a common vocabulary for building more trustworthy LLM systems.

## Key points
- **Three boundaries:**
  - Universal: what humans know and can express as textual QA.
  - Parametric: what is encoded in a given model's parameters.
  - Outward: what can be empirically checked on a limited set of prompts.
- **Four knowledge types:** Prompt-Agnostic Known (PAK), Prompt-Sensitive Known (PSK), Model-Specific Unknown (MSU) and Model-Agnostic Unknown (MAU). They are defined via output probability above or below a threshold ϵ across input-output expressions Q k.
- **Behaviours mapped to types:**
  - PSK: untruthful answers triggered by false or irrelevant context.
  - MSU: factuality hallucinations from missing domain knowledge, outdated data (e.g., LLaMA2 favouring older years) and overconfidence.
  - MAU: answers that are truthful but unwanted, such as random replies to ambiguous queries.
- **Mitigation side effects:** over-refusal and extra cost from clarification rounds, RAG noise or self-correction.
- **Resources:** a paper list at github.com/li-moxin/knowledge_boundary_survey, plus a dataset overview in the appendix.
