## Summary
Autoregressive Transformer decoders emit tokens one at a time, which limits parallelism at inference. Earlier non-autoregressive NMT systems by Gu et al. (2017) and Lee et al. (2018) needed separately trained components and multi-step inference, such as fertility prediction or explicit length estimation. Libovický and Helcl recast translation as sequence labeling, making the model fully end-to-end.

Each Transformer encoder state is linearly projected and sliced into k vectors, giving a sequence k times longer than the source. A decoder without the causal mask then labels every position with either a wordpiece or a null symbol. Training uses the Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss, which sums over all valid null placements via dynamic programming.

The authors tested three variants on WMT English-Romanian and English-German. Single-pass BLEU was roughly on par with comparable non-autoregressive baselines. Decoding was much faster than autoregressive decoding, but quality stayed clearly below it. This shows that one-pass parallel translation can be trained directly without auxiliary models.

## Key points
- **Variants compared:**
  - a 12-layer deep encoder with no decoder;
  - a 6+6 encoder-decoder;
  - the same encoder-decoder with positional encoding.
- **Shared settings:** model dimension 512, feed-forward dimension 4096, 16 attention heads, split factor k = 3.
- **Data:**
  - WMT16 en-ro: 613k sentence pairs, 38k shared wordpieces.
  - WMT en-de: 4.6M sentence pairs, 41k wordpieces; validated on WMT13, tested on WMT14 and WMT15.
- **Tools:** Neural Monkey for the implementation; SacreBLEU for scoring.
- **Best BLEU (with weight averaging of 5 checkpoints and beam search):**
  - en-ro 19.93 and ro-en 25.28;
  - WMT15 en-de 20.67 and de-en 22.55, above the 19.13/21.69 of Lee et al.'s best result.
  - The encoder-decoder variants beat the deep encoder.
- **Manual evaluation (100 sentences per direction, non-autoregressive model):**
  - Fully correct: 23% for en→de and 13% for de→en.
  - Comprehensible: 71% and 51% respectively.
  - Common errors: verbs missing at the end of German sentences (35% in en→de) and corrupted named entities and rare multi-wordpiece words.
- **Sentence-length analysis:** sentence-level BLEU drops with source length (r = −0.42 versus −0.39 for the autoregressive model) and correlates mildly with the number of null symbols (r = 0.15). The authors suggest a larger k could help, at the cost of GPU memory, and that an external language model with beam search may be worth exploring.
