## Summary
Training LLM agents with reinforcement learning on long multi-turn tool-use tasks is limited by context growth. Long contexts weaken instruction following, make rollouts slow and expensive, and cap how many steps an agent can take. The authors make context compression part of training. When the accumulated history passes a length threshold, the model writes its own summary, and the working state restarts from the original prompt plus that summary. They formalize this as a summarization-augmented MDP and derive a policy gradient that splits a long rollout into several summarized sub-trajectories. Because of this split, standard RL infrastructure can jointly train tool use and summarization. The resulting algorithm, SUPO, adds group-relative advantage estimation and masking of overlong trajectories. On CodeGym, BrowseComp-Plus and SWE-Bench-Verified, SUPO raises success rates with the same or a smaller working context than vanilla multi-turn RL. Allowing more summarization rounds at test time than during training helps further on search tasks. The work shows that agents can learn to operate well past a fixed context window.

## Key points
- SUPO (SUmmarization augmented Policy Optimization) trains tool-use actions and summary generation end to end under one policy gradient (Theorem 2.1). The working context stays bounded by the summarization threshold plus per-step output and tool-observation limits.
- Compared with baselines at equal or lower working context length, success rates improve by +3.2% on CodeGym and +14.0% on BrowseComp-Plus.
- On BrowseComp-Plus with a 64K working context, increasing the number of test-time summarization rounds beyond the training setting yields up to +7.0%. The SUPO-trained model reaches the highest final accuracy among the compared methods, 60.0%.
- On SWE-Bench-Verified with Seed-OSS-36B-Instruct, SUPO reaches 55.0% versus 48.0% for GRPO. It uses a 32K working context (320K effective, with up to 9 summaries), and average tool calls per rollout rise from 27.8 to 74.9. Training used 740 filtered instances from SWE-Gym and SWE-Rebench.
- Stated limitations:
  - SUPO relies on verifiable terminal rewards.
  - There is no learned critic.
  - Summarization is triggered by a fixed length rule rather than learned.
