## Summary
Large language models can solve new tasks from a few input–output examples placed in the prompt. This is called few-shot in-context learning (ICL), and its accuracy depends heavily on which examples are chosen. Early approaches used one fixed demonstration set per task, written by hand, sampled at random or picked by heuristics. This survey by Luo et al. reviews retrieval-based ICL (RetICL), where a retriever picks demonstrations separately for every incoming query. The paper adds no new data or model. Instead, it organizes 22 representative studies along several dimensions:
- the retrieval objective (similarity or diversity);
- how several demonstrations are assembled (single pass, clustering or iterative);
- the origin of the retrieval pool;
- off-the-shelf versus fine-tuned retrievers and their training losses;
- target applications.

The authors find that query-specific retrieval usually outperforms random or static demonstrations, but no retriever type wins on every task. For newcomers, the survey works as a map of a fragmented field with inconsistent terminology. It also lists open problems that merit further work.

## Key points
- The survey compares 22 RetICL papers in a single table (Table 1) by LLM, retrieval method, corpus, evaluation tasks and training strategy. Examples include KATE (RoBERTa+kNN), EPR (fine-tuned retriever, InfoNCE loss), CEIL (diversity training), Dr.ICL (PaLM/Flan-PaLM with BM25 and GTR), UDR, LLM-R and RetICL (LSTM trained with PPO).
- Off-the-shelf retrievers covered include BM25, SBERT, SimCSE, ColBERTv2 and multilingual SBERT. Fine-tuned retrievers are trained with list-wise ranking, InfoNCE, KL-divergence distillation, iterative training, diversity training or re-rankers.
- Retrieval pools are grouped into five types:
  - in-domain training data;
  - cross-domain data;
  - mixed-domain data;
  - free-form corpora;
  - unlabeled queries with LLM-generated chain-of-thought.
- Training signals for retrievers usually come from LLM scoring of positive and negative demonstrations. This is costly, and it is often unclear what counts as a positive example.
- Proposed future directions:
  - active updating of the retrieval corpus;
  - RetICL for small LMs;
  - theory of why similar demonstrations help;
  - fine-tuning LLMs for RetICL;
  - vision-and-language models.
