## Summary
This survey maps how deep learning is used to solve geometry problems. The task is a long-standing test of machine mathematical reasoning and a natural multimodal benchmark, because solving a problem means reading a diagram, reasoning logically and computing numbers. The authors began from classic papers, ran one round of forward and backward citation snowballing, searched Google Scholar, and screened the results by hand, ending with over 310 relevant papers.

They sort the field into three task levels. Fundamental skills include diagram understanding, text parsing, relation extraction and knowledge prediction. The core tasks are theorem proving and numerical calculation. Geometry also appears inside broader math-reasoning benchmarks. Methods are grouped by architecture, training stage and inference stage. The paper also reviews automatic and manual evaluation, compares representative models, and names open problems.

The survey's value is that it organizes a fast-growing, previously scattered subfield. It also offers a maintained paper list and a research agenda.

## Key points
- Publications on deep learning for geometry problem solving grew from 1 in 2018 to 112 in 2024. The paper list is hosted at github.com/majianz/dl4gps.
- Example datasets by task:
  - numerical calculation: GEOS, GeoQA, Geometry3K, PGPS9K
  - proving: UniGeo, IMO-AG-30, MO-TG-225
  - diagram understanding: PGDP5K, AutoGeo
  - composite math reasoning: MATH, MathVista, MathVerse
- The dominant architecture is the Encoder-Decoder. Its parts are a text encoder (LSTM, GRU or Transformer), a diagram encoder (CNN, ViT or VQ-VAE), a fusion module, a decoder and an optional knowledge module. GANs, GNNs and decoder-only models are also reviewed.
- Training approaches covered are pre-training, supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. Inference approaches covered are test-time scaling and knowledge-augmented methods.
- Proposed future directions:
  - tighter coupling of perception and reasoning
  - geometry-specific RL, such as process reward models (PRMs) and rewards from symbolic provers or verifiers
  - strategies inspired by human problem solving
  - dedicated geometry-education systems
