## Summary
Unified multimodal large language models (MLLMs) aim to both understand and generate text, images, audio and other modalities within one system. Research on them has grown quickly but in scattered directions, often without clearly stated motivations or trade-offs. This survey from Northeastern University brings that work together. It first covers the building blocks: tokenizers for text, vision, audio and other data types, and the autoregressive LLM objective. It then sorts recent unified models into a taxonomy based on architecture, visual representation, loss design, alignment and training strategy. Text–vision models get the most attention, since they dominate the field. The authors also take positions of their own. They favour semantic-level visual features, citing the Platonic Representation Hypothesis, and recommend simple, compute-aware designs. They describe four reasons to pursue unification: a shared model of reality, transfer across modalities, transfer across tasks within one modality, and emergent zero-shot abilities. They also note that strong evidence of cross-modal benefit is still limited. The survey serves as a roadmap for researchers building general multimodal systems.

## Key points
- The core resource is a taxonomy table (Table 1) of unified models listed by release date. Each entry records modalities, supported tasks, key features and design choices, and examples include SEED, EMU/EMU2/EMU3, Chameleon, Transfusion, Show-o, MIO, Janus and OmniGen2.
- The tokenizer overview covers several modalities:
  - text: BPE, WordPiece, Unigram, SentencePiece, ByT5, BLT;
  - vision: VQ-style discrete codebooks, CLIP-like continuous features, Q-Former;
  - audio: EnCodec, SoundStream, HuBERT, WavTokenizer, and Whisper-large-v3 as used in Qwen2.5-Omni;
  - other data: point clouds, graphs, proteins, time series.
- Visual representations are split into pixel-level (VAE-based) and semantic-level (CLIP-based). The authors argue for the semantic-level option.
- The authors find reproducible evidence of mutual cross-modal benefit still scarce, and attribute this to limits in model capacity, data balance and compute. MetaMorph is cited as evidence that a shared visual encoder helps both understanding and generation.
- The authors acknowledge limitations: closed systems such as Gemini and ChatGPT cannot be analysed in depth, and training data details are often undisclosed. The PDF header gives the title as "...: More than A Survey".
