## Summary
Vision-language models (VLMs) often hallucinate, describing content that the image does not support. Training-free decoding fixes usually counteract language priors through contrastive decoding or by upweighting visual embeddings. These fixes do little when the real problem is that small details are too low-resolution to recognize. The authors propose the Perception Magnifier (PM), a decoding-time method that needs no gradients. At each generation step, PM reads cached attention from several middle layers to find the visual tokens the model relies on most. It then masks those tokens and runs the sequence again to surface regions it missed, repeating until no token draws strong attention. The collected scores form a smoothed pixel-level perception map. PM uses this map to resample the image, enlarging important areas and compressing the rest instead of cropping it away, so the overall spatial layout is kept. Evaluation used hallucination benchmarks and GPT-4o-assisted scoring. PM reduced hallucinations in VQA and open-ended generation while keeping reasoning ability intact. This makes it a practical plug-in for interleaved VLMs.

## Key points
- PM is a model-agnostic plug-in for interleaved VLMs that place patch embeddings in the same sequence as text tokens. The code is at github.com/ShunqiM/PM.
- In the MME-Perception ablation, PM's magnification scored 683.33. Alternative ways of highlighting regions scored lower: DualView 650.00, ViCrop 646.67, masking 648.33, bounding box 640.00 and blurring 630.00.
- PM's attention map beat other map-construction methods even without iterative refinement (665.00). It outperformed Rel Map (655.00), API CLIP (646.67) and ViCrop-R/G (645.00/640.00). Adding the refinement step and aggregating over multiple layers improved results further.
- Unlike ViCrop, PM keeps the surrounding context and avoids doubling the number of visual tokens. This helps on counting and position questions.
- The authors list three limitations:
  - Magnification can distort local shapes.
  - Resampling the image at each step prevents KV caching, which adds compute cost.
  - Models with complex token-to-image mappings may need extra attention alignment.
