## Summary
This is not an experimental study. It is the 2020 instalment (number XXIV) of an annual reference list compiled by Maria Bulakh, Magdalena Krzyżanowska and Francesca Panini. The list catalogues scholarship on the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The PDF header gives the venue as Aethiopica 24 (2021), pp. 212–222, not 2022.

The problem it addresses is keeping track of a scattered literature. That literature appears in many languages (English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Amharic) and in venues ranging from Interspeech to philological journals. The compilers group entries by language family, starting with a general "Ethiopian Afrasian" section. They add a section listing book reviews and an addenda section for overlooked 2019 items. Co-authors who are not listed first get pointer entries to the main record.

There are no methods, data or results in the NLP sense. The value is as a finding aid. For computational work, it points to speech recognition, language modelling, word prediction and text classification papers on Amharic, Tigrinya and related languages.

## Key points
- Sections cover:
  - general Afroasiatic topics in Ethiopia;
  - Ethiopian Semitic (Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Gǝʿǝz, Harari);
  - Cushitic (Oromo, Sidaama, Konso, Kambaata, Ts'amakko, Beja and others);
  - presumably Omotic, in the omitted middle part;
  - reviews and addenda.
- Computational entries:
  - multilingual ASR for Ethiopian languages built on GlobalPhone (Interspeech 2020);
  - multilingual acoustic and language modelling for Ethio-Semitic languages (Interspeech 2020);
  - a statistical Tigrigna word-prediction keyboard for Android;
  - a study of feature selection for Amharic document classification.
- Rovenchak and Buk (Ukrainian authors) wrote the Oxford Handbook chapter on Indigenous African Scripts, which includes the Somali alphabet and Oromo script.
- Large reference works listed include:
  - Voigt's *Tigrinische Bibliographie* (566 pp.);
  - The Oxford Handbook of African Languages (1,104 pp.);
  - a Festschrift for Maarten Mous.
- Other notable entries are a Lingua study measuring linguistic distance among South Ethiosemitic languages, and Gutgarts's work on standardising Tigrinya orthography.

## Interesting ideas
- Each co-author who is not listed first gets a short redirect entry pointing to the full record, so one canonical item is reachable from every name. — For Mova (world): Entity records in the knowledge graph could keep one canonical node with lightweight alias pointers, so any mention of the alias resolves to the canonical node.
- Many entries carry a scope note such as "including Ethiopian Semitic and Cushitic," which marks partial coverage without forcing a single category. — For Mova (learn): Evaluation sets could tag each item with all the phenomena it touches, so error analysis can slice results by every relevant phenomenon instead of one label.
- Non-Latin titles are given three ways: in the original script, in scholarly transliteration and as an English gloss. — For Mova (back): The translation and generation layer could keep source form, normalised form and gloss side by side, so each rendering step stays traceable.
- Ethiopian names keep their native given-name-plus-father's-name order, while European names are inverted surname-first. This avoids forcing one naming scheme onto all people. — For Mova (world): Person entities should store culture-specific name structure, so the system does not wrongly treat a patronymic as a family surname.
- Items missed in earlier years are added openly in an Addenda section rather than silently merged into older lists. — For Mova (learn): Silver-data releases could carry an explicit late-additions block, so evaluations stay reproducible against earlier versions.
