## Summary
This is not an NLP paper. It is the twenty-fifth yearly installment of a running bibliography in Aethiopica (vol. 25), compiled by Maria Bulakh (HSE University), Magdalena Krzyżanowska and Francesca Panini (Universität Hamburg). It addresses a practical need in a small, scattered field: collecting in one place what was published during 2021 on the Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages.

The output is a classified list of references, not an experiment. Entries are grouped by language branch, from a general "Ethiopian Afrasian" section down to Omotic. Recurring edited volumes get short titles. Every co-author gets a cross-reference pointing to the main entry. Separate sections list reviews of earlier books and late additions from 2020.

There is no corpus, treebank, model or evaluation score. The value is that typologists and people building resources for languages such as Amharic, Tigrinya, Gamo, Sezo or Dizi get a reliable index of current work.

## Key points
- The installment covers 2021 output, appears in Aethiopica 25, and continues a series that is now at number XXV.
- Two edited volumes are cited by short titles:
  - "Aspects of Ethiopian Languages" (John Benjamins, 2021; Derib Ado, Almaz Wasse Gelagay, Janne Bondi Johannessen, eds).
  - "Langues couchitiques de la Corne de l'Afrique" (Lacito, 2021).
- The visible Omotic entries cover several topics:
  - term formation in Gamo
  - serial verbs in Sezo
  - Mao pronouns
  - the Basketo passive
  - phasal polarity in Ometo
  - Dawro personal names
  - Dizi phonology
- Writing-system work also appears: competing scripts in multilingual Ethiopia (Fekede Menuta) and an Ethiopic-script orthography for Dime (Mulugeta Seyoum, in the Addenda).
- Meyer & Treis (2021) is a guide to citing Ethiopian authors correctly. The bibliography itself files Ethiopian names in their natural order (given name followed by father's name), not inverted surname-first.

## Interesting ideas
- Each co-author gets a stub entry ("X: see Y") that points to the single full record, so one item is reachable under any of its people without being duplicated. — For Mova (world): The entity store could keep one canonical node per work or event and add lightweight alias nodes for each participant, so a lookup under any name lands on the same record.
- A long volume title is defined once in a header section and then cited everywhere by a short label. This keeps entries compact and unambiguous. — For Mova (frames): Coreference could model "defined short form, later reuse" as an explicit pattern, linking an abbreviated title back to the full noun phrase that introduced it.
- Ethiopian names have no inherited surname, so they are not inverted, and a dedicated paper explains how to cite them. Naming conventions are culture-specific and should not be forced into one Western template. — For Mova (tokens): Name handling should not assume "last token = family name". A small per-culture rule set could keep lemmas and entity keys for patronymic names from being mangled.
- Items missed in an earlier year are not edited into the old list. They go into a separate, clearly marked Addenda section, which keeps past releases stable and corrections traceable. — For Mova (learn): Silver data and repair rules could follow the same append-only policy, logging late fixes as dated addenda instead of silently rewriting earlier training snapshots.
- Reviews are listed as separate records linked to the book they evaluate. This creates a "work A is assessed by work B" relation rather than mixing the two. — For Mova (world): The knowledge graph could store commentary or evaluation as its own relation type between documents, which helps answer questions about who judged what.

*Our summary of the paper, in our own words — not its text. The work belongs to its authors; read it at the links above.*
