## Summary
The paper describes the CODWOE shared task at SemEval-2022. It tests whether word embeddings contain the same information as dictionary definitions. The task is divided into two tracks. In the Definition Modeling track, a definition must be generated from a word's vector. In the Reverse Dictionary track, the components of the vector must be reconstructed from the text of the definition. The authors collected parallel data for English, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian. The definitions were taken from DBnary, i.e., from Wiktionary, and the embeddings were trained using the same scheme on corpora of comparable size. To ensure a fair comparison, participants were not allowed to use external resources or pretrained models. Overall, the results are weak. Standard text generation metrics yield low and unreliable scores, and a substantial proportion of the generated definitions are irrelevant. Character-based embeddings rarely lagged noticeably behind distributional ones. The authors consider the question of whether embeddings and dictionaries are equivalent to remain open. The suitability of Definition Modeling for evaluating embeddings also remains doubtful. For low-resource languages, this is an important signal: building lexical resources from scratch in this way is not yet very effective.

## Key points
- Data: definitions only for nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs from DBnary. The authors parsed the English portion themselves from Wiktionary dumps in order to obtain usage examples. The datasets are published at https://codwoe.atilf.fr/.
- Three types of embeddings with dimensionality 256:
  - word2vec (gensim);
  - contextual ELECTRA embeddings, only for en, fr and ru, since the Spanish and Italian Wiktionary contain too few usage examples;
  - character-based embeddings from an LSTM autoencoder as a non-semantic baseline.
- The corpus for each language contains approximately 1 billion tokens: 2.5 GB of Wikipedia, 2.2 GB of OpenSubtitles (OPUS) and 0.3 GB of books (LiberLiber, Wikisource or Gutenberg). Its size is comparable to the 1B Words benchmark.
- The metrics are unreliable. BLEU scores are considerably lower than those typically reported in the literature. A meaningless "definition" such as ", or ." ranks among the best by S-BLEU for some languages.
- The BLCU-ICALL team manually evaluated 200 generated definitions: 52% were irrelevant and 23.5% were overly general. According to an observation by the Edinburgh team, ELECTRA vectors cluster by word frequency, while character-based vectors separate by word length.
