## Summary
The paper tests a common claim about Abu Rumi's Amharic Bible (Abba Abraham, d. 1819). The claim is that its Old Testament tracks the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) closely, often over the Greek and the GƼʞƼz versions. The author uses the Book of Ruth as a test case because it is short enough to support general conclusions. She compares selected verses and names across several versions: the Hebrew MT, the LXX, GƼʞƼz manuscripts from EMML, the Vulgate, Arabic versions and English Bibles.

Abu Rumi's close literalism does restore narrative details the GƼʞƼz had lost or softened, such as who kisses whom and whether God is blamed for Naomi's misery. However, his focus on literal wording and plain meaning makes him miss the story's craft: rhythm, accents and especially "inclusions," which are repeated words or phrases tying scenes together. Among the versions compared, his rendering of these paired inclusions is the least consistent.

This matters because later Amharic Bibles relied heavily on his text. Such translations also remain valuable for comparative syntax and the history of translation schools.

## Key points
- Abu Rumi worked with M. Asselin, French Vice Consul in Cairo. The British and Foreign Bible Society bought his text and published it complete in 1840. The PDF itself is dated Aethiopica 12 (2009), not 2012.
- In Ruth 1:14, the GƼʞƼz has Naomi kiss Orpah, whereas MT and LXX have Orpah return the kiss. Abu Rumi follows the Hebrew and so restores the two-way farewell kiss that closes the scene.
- In 1:13 and 1:20, the GƼʞƼz shifts blame away from God, for example by saying God's hand "has left me" or that Naomi is simply bitter. Abu Rumi keeps God as the cause, as in MT and LXX.
- Table 2 lists about ten inclusion pairs or sets (e.g., 1:9/3:1 "rest," 2:12/3:9 "wing," 2:1/3:11 "worthy"). Abu Rumi translates repeated phrases differently each time, e.g., 2:8 versus 2:21.
- Abu Rumi's apparent preference for the Hebrew could instead reflect Arabic sources he consulted. Settling this would need a full critical edition of the Arabic Bible.

## Interesting ideas
- A reciprocal gesture whose roles are swapped (A kisses B, later B kisses A) can mark both the opening and the closing of a scene. If the direction is lost, the scene structure breaks. — For Mova (world): Scene boundaries could be detected by finding a repeated event type whose agent and patient have swapped, and that link could be stored in the event order.
- A text can quietly change meaning by deleting the causer, e.g., moving from "God made me bitter" to "I am bitter." — For Mova (frames): Checks could flag when a causative frame loses its agent between paraphrases, so that blame and responsibility stay explicit in the frames.
- The paper measures consistency over repeated source phrases: a translation is scored on whether each paired occurrence gets the same rendering. — For Mova (back): The text → graph → text compressor could add an inclusion-consistency check, requiring the same graph node to come out in the same wording each time it recurs.
- Hebrew accents decide whether "at mealtime" in Ruth 2:14 attaches to "said" or to "come," and ignoring them changes the meaning. — For Mova (tree): Punctuation and prosody-like cues could be used as evidence for temporal-adjunct attachment, with such cases logged as known ambiguity sites in treebank evaluation.
- Agreement between one version and the MT may come from a shared intermediate source (Arabic) rather than direct dependence. — For Mova (learn): Silver data agreed by several witness parsers should be checked for shared ancestry, such as common training data, before agreement is counted as independent evidence.
