## Summary
This survey organizes the fast-growing literature on using large language models to imitate users in dialogue. Earlier statistical user models, such as Bradley-Terry-Luce, Plackett-Luce, collaborative filtering and click models, needed substantial user data and were usually built for one task. LLMs can instead produce rich, context-aware synthetic conversations through prompting alone. The authors note that no prior survey treats conversational user simulation as its own sub-field. They frame the task formally: predict a participant's next utterance from the dialogue history and that participant's context.

Existing work is arranged around three questions:
- **Who** is simulated, from a generic user down to a specific individual.
- **What** is simulated.
- **How** the conversation is produced, including core techniques and evaluation methods.

The paper also catalogs datasets and applications. It closes with open problems: persona drift in long dialogues, limited behavioral diversity, and bias or toxicity. The survey gives researchers building synthetic users for evaluation, training or data augmentation a shared vocabulary and map of the field. However, it runs no benchmark of its own.

## Key points
- The "Who" axis has five levels of user granularity: general (default persona), persona-level (an explicit set of demographic, interest or style attributes), role play (a real or fictional identity like "Mark Zuckerberg at 20"), individual (full personal history such as chat logs), and hybrid.
- The core formulation models P(u_t | C_{t-1}, Ψ_p). This covers user-user, user-system and multi-party conversations.
- Applications include:
  - data augmentation for sparse user histories;
  - conversational recommendation;
  - educational companions;
  - HCI interface testing;
  - video question answering with Elo-style arena evaluation.
- The main open challenges are:
  - consistency over long conversations;
  - simulated users who are too cooperative or too homogeneous;
  - neglect of multi-user settings;
  - bias and toxic output;
  - ethical risks of role-playing public figures.
- The paper appeared in EACL 2026 (Volume 1: Long Papers, pp. 4266–4301). It is a collaboration led by Vanderbilt University and Adobe Research.
