## Summary
Most benchmarks for AI mental-health assistants test isolated, single-turn exchanges. Real counseling, by contrast, unfolds over many sessions, depends on remembering the client's history, and often mixes therapeutic schools. PsychEval addresses this gap with a Chinese-language benchmark built by using LLMs (e.g., GPT-5) to turn published clinical case reports into multi-session dialogues. Every case follows a shared three-stage workflow: case conceptualization, core intervention, and consolidation/prevention. The dialogues are annotated with a hierarchical skill taxonomy that links high-level strategies to fine-grained counselor actions. The authors also propose an evaluation framework that scores both how realistic the simulated client is and how competent the counselor is, using metrics common to all therapies as well as therapy-specific ones. Against prior corpora, PsychEval scores highest on alliance and therapy-adherence measures and shows a plausible improvement trajectory for clients across sessions. Expert raters agree closely with the LLM judge. The resource can serve as a test bed and as a reinforcement learning environment for training long-horizon AI counselors.

## Key points
- **Source and structure:** built from 369 case reports in psychology journals, with 6–10 sessions per case (7.6 on average). It covers five therapies (Psychodynamic, Behavioral, CBT, Humanistic-Existential, Postmodernist) plus Integrative, across six psychological topics.
- **Annotations and profiles:** more than 677 meta-skills and 4577 atomic skills, plus over 2,000 client profiles. Evaluation uses 18 metrics at the Client-Level and Counselor-Level.
- **Comparison with prior corpora:** PsychEval reaches WAI 7.26, HTAIS 6.40, CTRS 9.19 and PSC 7.27, outperforming PsyDTCorpus, CPsyCoun, PsyDial and SimPsyDial.
- **Client trajectory:** from one session to the next, BDI-II falls by 0.45 and IPO by 0.09, while CCT rises by 0.14 and SFBT by 0.16. Psy-Insight shows the opposite trends.
- **Human validation and limitations:** two experts rated 231 sessions. Their mutual weighted kappa averaged 0.83, and agreement with GPT-5 averaged 0.80–0.83. The benchmark is text-only, underrepresents high-risk cases, and is tied to the Chinese cultural context.
