## Summary
This system paper addresses SemEval-2026 Task 11, which tests whether models can judge syllogistic validity without being swayed by how believable a conclusion sounds (the content effect, or belief bias). The task has four subtasks: English validity checking, validity checking with irrelevant premises to identify, and multilingual versions of both covering 11 languages. The authors compare three approaches. The first is direct LLM judgement (DNI). The second translates text into first-order logic, either with an LLM or with a regex rule engine, and checks it with the Otter theorem prover (TBI-FOL). The third maps text to Aristotelian triples checked against a Prolog knowledge base (TBI-SYL). All experiments use compact models with 135M–4B parameters. The FOL pipeline worked best, and Otter's refutation proofs also identify which premises were relevant. The best English system reached 95.29% accuracy. Results were sensitive to prompt and few-shot choices. The work shows that small LLMs can serve as reliable parsers when a symbolic solver handles the actual inference.

## Key points
- **Architectures:** DNI, Neur-/Rule-TBI-FOL (Otter) and TBI-SYL (Prolog KB encoding all 256 classical moods). Existential import is added automatically as existence clauses.
- **Models:** SmolLM, Qwen, Llama and Gemma families, run with greedy decoding. The top configuration, Eng2FOL5, used SmolLM3-3B for Subtask 1 and Qwen3-4B-Instruct for Subtask 2.
- **Rankings:** Subtask 1 reached 95.29% (19th of 45). Subtask 2 reached 95.79% (9th of 16), with premise F1 of 92.37 and TCE of 3.26. Subtask 3 reached 88.02% (12th of 15) using native multilingual input. Subtask 4 reached 77.08% (11th of 15) after first translating inputs into English with Google Translate.
- **Simplification:** Adding an LLM step that simplifies text before FOL translation hurt performance. TCE rose from 4.17 to 12.5, and accuracy on plausible-valid items fell from 89.58 to 70.83.
- **Language variation:** Accuracy differed widely across languages, with Dutch scoring a perfect 100% while Swahili managed only 52%. Code is available on GitHub (WiebkePetersen/HHU-SyLo-SemEval2026-Task11).
