## Summary
Contrastive Decoding (CD) improves LLM reasoning by subtracting a weak "amateur" model's token scores from those of a stronger "expert" model. It has two drawbacks. First, it needs a smaller model from the same family with a shared vocabulary, and none exists for models such as Mistral-7B or DeepSeek-7B. Second, both models must be held in memory at once.

The authors propose Distillation Contrastive Decoding (DCD), which derives the amateur from the expert itself. Following Contrastive Chain-of-thought Prompting, the expert is prompted with correct chain-of-thought demonstrations. A degraded copy, created by enabling attention dropout at inference time or by quantization, receives deliberately flawed demonstrations. The two sets of logits are then merged with the standard CD formula, weighted by a penalty β.

On GSM8K (arithmetic) and StrategyQA (commonsense), using Llama2 and Mistral-7B base models, DCD outperforms CD and other inference-time baselines. The approach offers a cheaper, architecture-agnostic way to boost reasoning without retraining or a second model. However, it was tested only on base models and relatively simple reasoning tasks.

## Key points
- On GSM8K, DCD lifts Llama2 accuracy by up to 3.79% and beats CD by 1.89%. On StrategyQA, it gains up to 5.9% and leads all compared methods.
- Dropout on the amateur works best overall, with rates of about 0.2–0.4 being optimal; both lower and higher rates hurt accuracy.
- Quantized amateurs (4-bit AWQ, 4-bit GPTQ, 8-bit) on Llama2-7B all scored below the unquantized amateur. A smaller or weaker amateur therefore does not automatically help.
- Compared with non-distilled CP+CD, DCD with dropout scores higher in every setting tested:
  - GSM8K: 17.28 vs 16.00 (Llama2-7B) and 33.21 vs 31.62 (Llama2-13B).
  - StrategyQA: 65.15 vs 63.23 (Llama2-7B) and 71.10 vs 69.65 (Llama2-13B).
- Code is released at github.com/pphuc25/distil-cd (VietAI Research).
