## Summary
The paper examines how toxicity arises and spreads in Brazilian Portuguese Reddit threads. It focuses on "triggers," which are non-toxic comments that draw toxic replies. The work builds on an earlier pilot study by the same group (Piorino et al., 2025). That study relied on a costly proprietary model and a small sample, so the authors now use an open model and many more discussion trees.

They fine-tuned BERTabaporu, a BERT model pretrained on Brazilian tweets, as a binary toxicity classifier. Training data combined human annotations with extra labels produced by majority vote among three LLMs. The classifier was then run over a 2022 corpus drawn from ten popular Brazilian subreddits. The authors analysed thread structure and language in trees with and without triggers.

Trees containing toxicity turn out deeper and attract more engagement. Their replies start out semantically cohesive, but coherence falls as the conversation goes on. Non-toxic threads lean toward social bonding. These patterns could support early, proactive moderation in a language that remains under-studied for this task.

## Key points
- **Released resources:**
  - a dataset of 883,953 Brazilian Reddit discussion trees;
  - the toxicity classifier, published on Hugging Face as `giovanaPcarvalho/bertabaporu-toxicity-reddit-ptbr`.
- **Source corpus:** data from Lima et al. (2024), collected via Pushshift. After filtering out bots, deleted items, laughter-only replies and similar noise, it holds 6,589,541 comments and about 390,000 posts from subreddits such as brasil, desabafos and futebol.
- **Human annotation:** 2,961 comments with majority-vote labels, based on Perspective API definitions. Of these, 85.21% are non-toxic and 14.79% toxic.
- **Synthetic labels:** Sabiá-2, Llama-2 and Mistral added 3,385 labelled comments, used for training only. The training set reached 5,753 comments (885 toxic), and the test set contains human labels exclusively.
- **Base model:** BERTabaporu, pretrained on roughly 238M tweets, was fine-tuned with Hugging Face Transformers. Learning rate and batch size were chosen by grid search.
