## Summary
The paper addresses automatic responses to homophobic and transphobic social-media comments in Tamil and English. It is a submission to Task 2 (Counter Narrative Generation) of the shared task at DravidianLangTech@LT-EDI 2026. Instead of large generative models, the DLRG team builds a lightweight pipeline from classical components:

- A comment is first labelled as homophobic or transphobic using TF-IDF n-gram features.
- A separate Logistic Regression model locates the harmful span.
- A counter narrative is chosen by cosine-similarity retrieval over the top three candidates, so responses are selected rather than freely generated.

The two languages use different settings. Tamil relies on character n-grams with Multinomial Naive Bayes. English uses word n-grams, stop-word removal and a Linear SVC.

Outputs were judged with BERTScore and Distinct-2, plus rubric scores for politeness, coherence and quality. The system ranked first for Tamil and fourth for English. This suggests that cheap, retrieval-based methods remain competitive for low-resource languages. The authors acknowledge that such methods capture meaning only shallowly and limit response diversity.

## Key points
- **Data:** The organisers' dataset has 800 train / 109 test items for Tamil and 1800 train / 66 test items for English. Each item is labelled homophobic or transphobic.
- **Features and classifiers:**
  - Tamil: TF-IDF character 3–5-grams with Multinomial Naive Bayes.
  - English: TF-IDF word 1–2-grams with Linear SVC.
  - Span detection: Logistic Regression.
  - Retrieval: cosine similarity with K=3.
- **Tamil results (1st place, 80.40% overall):** BERTScore 85.73, Distinct-2 27.30, PRS 100, QS 97.71, CCNC 91.28.
- **English results (4th place, 77.29% overall):** BERTScore 85.55 and Distinct-2 74.36, but weaker rubric scores (PRS 72.73, QS 69.70, CCNC 84.09).
- **Code:** Available at github.com/kannanrrk/Span-Counter-Feature-Based.
