## Summary
Language models often read far more context than a prediction needs. This wastes compute and energy and obscures which evidence drives decisions. Current token-pruning methods rank tokens by attention or gradients, but neither signal is a reliable explanation. MaskLoRA freezes the backbone and adds a rank-r LoRA adapter to each layer. It then scores each token by how strongly the adapter shifts its hidden state or attention logits. Hard–Concrete gates are trained with four loss terms: task cross-entropy, expected L0 sparsity, a KL term that keeps masked outputs close to full ones, and a subspace-concentration penalty. A proven bound limits the full-versus-masked KL by the summed scores of discarded tokens, which justifies keeping the top-k tokens. On GLUE and SQuAD encoders, the method matches full-model accuracy with 1.3–2.6× wall-clock speedups. Long-context tasks gain up to 3.6× with small losses, and faithfulness also improves. Because it works with KV-caches and FlashAttention, MaskLoRA is practical for real serving.

## Key points
- **Long-context results:** NarrativeQA/GovReport speedups are 1.5–3.6×. Score drops are ≤0.4 at ρ=70%, about 1.2 at ρ=50%, and about 2.5 at ρ≈30%.
- **Faithfulness and energy:** At ρ=50%, sufficiency is 99.2% and necessity 59.3%, with lower KL than baselines. GPU Joules-per-correct falls from 3.28 to 1.34 at ρ≈30%.
- **Robustness:** On HANS, adversarial sentiment and noisy SQuAD, the absolute drop stays ≤0.9 at ρ≈50%.
- **Baseline comparison:** At a matched ρ=70% budget, MaskLoRA reaches 1.33× speedup. Attention top-k, gradient saliency, Length-Adaptive, DeeBERT/EvoPruneBERT, EBERT and an IA3-subspace variant reach 1.08–1.27×, with comparable score drops (0.2–0.3).
- **Decoder-only LLMs (Llama-2-7B/Llama-3-8B):** Prefill on 2k-token prompts speeds up 1.70/2.30/3.50× at ρ=70/50/30%, and 16k contexts reach up to 3.80×. Stated limitations include multi-hop prompts, possible bias against minority dialect markers, and sensitivity to rank and budget calibration.
