## Summary
This survey targets a gap in mechanistic interpretability (MI), the line of work that tries to explain transformer-based language models by reverse-engineering their internal computations into mechanisms people can understand. The field has produced many findings, but newcomers lack a structured entry point. Instead of organizing the literature by technique, the authors group it by research question. They build the taxonomy around three core objects of study: features, circuits, and universality. For each one they give a step-by-step workflow, called the Beginner's Roadmap, that runs from forming a hypothesis to running experiments. They also describe the main toolkits, including vocabulary projection, interventions, sparse autoencoders, probing, and visualization, with each tool's limitations and how it is evaluated. Case studies show how earlier papers fit the workflows. The review then covers findings on model capabilities, training dynamics, applications, and benchmarks. It closes with open problems such as weak evaluation standards and the reliance on manual hypothesis-building. The work matters as a practical guide for new researchers and as a planning aid for experienced ones.

## Key points
- The authors compare their survey with six related surveys, among them Ferrando et al. (2024), Bereska & Gavves (2024), and Sharkey et al. (2025). They claim theirs is the only one that is both task-centric and covers techniques, LM findings, applications, and future directions.
- Covered findings include in-context learning, reasoning, knowledge mechanisms, phase changes during training, and the effects of post-training. Covered applications include model enhancement and AI safety.
- The authors judge current benchmarks insufficient. For example, Tracr compiles RASP programs into transformers with known ground truth, but results on these synthetic models may not carry over to naturally trained models.
- Proposed future directions include:
  - automated hypothesis generation;
  - decoding higher-level propositions, such as the binding vectors of Feng & Steinhardt (2023);
  - human-AI collaboration built on mechanistic explanations, as in SHIFT (Marks et al., 2024b).
- An accompanying paper list is maintained on GitHub (awesome-mechanistic-interpretability-lm-papers). The version reviewed here is v4, dated October 2025.
