## Summary
This paper describes a system for SemEval-2026 Task 4 Track A. Given an anchor story and two candidate stories, the system picks the candidate whose narrative is structurally closer to the anchor. Similarity is assessed by comparing the stories' Outcomes, their Abstract Theme, and their Course of Action. Human judgments here are highly subjective. Using Wikipedia-derived story triples (200 dev, 400 test), the author compared LLMs of several sizes and then built a pipeline around GPT-5.2.

The pipeline has three steps:
1. JSON-schema prompts make the model break the comparison into per-aspect judgments and scores.
2. A "weak-signal gate" flags low-confidence predictions, using weighted aspect margins and the strength of the strongest single aspect.
3. Only the flagged cases are sent to an Answer Review prompt for reconsideration.

Selective revision raised dev accuracy to 79.5% and reached 75.75% on test, which placed second on the leaderboard. Other findings:
- Small 8B models performed close to chance.
- Verbose reasoning did not improve single-pass accuracy.
- Stripping surface details from the stories (decontextualization) hurt accuracy.

The work shows that cheap, margin-based confidence estimates can direct extra LLM effort to the cases that need it.

## Key points
- Baseline accuracy on dev with the Basic decomposition prompt:
  - Llama 3.1 8B and DeepSeek-R1 8B: 58.0%
  - GPT-OSS 20B: 65.5%
  - GPT-OSS 120B: 67.0%
  - GPT-5.2: 73.5%
- The best single prompt was "No Monologue" (77.5% dev). It used detailed system instructions and allowed only a one-character answer.
- Final gate settings were τS = 0.18 and τA = 0.25, with aspect weights of 0.4/0.3/0.3. The gate flagged 34.5% of dev items. On those flagged items, accuracy rose from 62.3% to 71.0%, while confident predictions were left untouched.
- On test, Weak Gating beat Verbose Scoring by 1.5 points (75.75% vs. 74.25%). The gain was not statistically significant (McNemar p = 0.26; bootstrap 95% CI [−0.75, +3.75]).
- Annotator agreement was low: Krippendorff's alpha was 0.33 overall and close to chance for individual aspects. The 1,900 LLM-generated synthetic training triples were of limited use.
