## Summary
Spoken language systems need a natural language component that produces a meaning representation and also constrains the speech recognizer. To do the second job, a parser must reject ill-formed word strings rather than simply maximize coverage. Seneff presents TINA, a parser that combines context-free grammars, ATN-style networks and unification. Hand-written rewrite rules are compiled into a shared network for each left-hand category. Transition probabilities between sibling categories are then estimated automatically from training sentences, which are parsed through a bootstrapping procedure. Parsing runs top-down with a best-first stack-decoding queue. Features attached to categories, not rules, handle agreement, long-distance movement and semantic restrictions. Upper levels of the tree encode syntax and lower levels encode semantics, so a semantic frame can be read directly from the parse. The probabilistic network can predict next-word candidates. This lets TINA screen hypotheses from MIT's SUMMIT recognizer in two database-access domains. The work matters because it shows one grammar can support both understanding and recognition constraint, with long-distance constraints that go beyond bigram models.

## Key points
- TINA's unification constraints are tied to categories, and features pass between nodes by default. Hypotheses are copied nondestructively, so no explicit backtracking is needed.
- Arc probabilities come from sibling-pair counts, normalized per left sibling, using special [start] and [end] nodes. In the appendix's three-digit number grammar, the transition from start to digits within hundreds-place gets probability 3/4.
- In the same worked example, the test phrase "four fifteen" has a perplexity of roughly 14.
- A built-in sentence generator exposes overgeneralization in the grammar and also produces a word-pair language model for the recognizer.
- TINA is integrated with SUMMIT and filters either complete sentences or partial theories during the search. The work was funded by DARPA.
