## Summary
Large language models can produce fluent text, but it is still unclear how to make them create long, well-sourced expository articles on the scale of a full Wikipedia page. The authors argue that the hardest part comes before writing: researching a topic and planning its structure. They introduce STORM, a system that automates this preparatory phase and whose name refers to building topic outlines by pairing retrieval with question asking from multiple perspectives. STORM first identifies several viewpoints relevant to a topic. It then stages simulated dialogues in which writers holding those viewpoints question an expert whose answers draw on trusted web sources. Finally, it organizes the gathered material into an outline that guides the article. To evaluate the system, the team built FreshWiki, a collection of recent high-quality Wikipedia articles, and designed metrics that judge outlines directly. They also collected opinions from experienced Wikipedia editors. Compared with a retrieval-augmented baseline that also works from an outline, STORM's articles were more often judged well organized and broad. The editors' feedback also exposed open problems for grounded long-form generation.

## Key points
- **STORM** treats pre-writing as three steps: discovering perspectives, simulating question-asking conversations with a source-grounded expert, and curating the results into an outline.
- **FreshWiki** is a new dataset of recent, high-quality Wikipedia articles. It is paired with outline-level assessments that evaluate the pre-writing stage separately from the final text.
- Against an outline-driven retrieval-augmented baseline, a larger share of STORM's articles was rated organized (+25% absolute) and broad in coverage (+10% absolute).
- Experienced Wikipedia editors evaluated the outputs and identified new challenges. These include *source bias transfer* and the *over-association of unrelated facts*.
- The work comes from Stanford University (Shao, Jiang, Kanell, Xu, Khattab, Lam) and was published as arXiv:2402.14207 in 2024.
