## Summary
LLMs that turn natural-language questions into SPARQL for Wikidata often invent identifiers. Wikidata URIs such as Q- and P-ids carry no meaning, so the model has to recall them from parametric memory, and it frequently produces IDs that look plausible but are wrong or do not exist. The authors propose PGMR (Post-Generation Memory Retrieval), which moves retrieval to after generation instead of before it, as in RAG. The LLM first writes an intermediate query that keeps full SPARQL syntax but uses tagged natural-language placeholders for entities and relations, each with a label and short description. A non-parametric retriever then matches every placeholder against entity and ontology memories built from KG metadata and substitutes the real URI. Because the placeholder text mirrors the stored metadata, retrieval aligns better than question-based RAG lookup. Tested on untagged LC-QuAD 2.0 and QALD-10 with several LLMs and distribution shifts, PGMR improves semantic query match (SQM) and answer F1 and almost entirely removes hallucinated URIs. It can also decline unanswerable questions and adds very little latency.

## Key points
- The intermediate query wraps placeholders in [ENT]/[REL] tags. Grounding uses separate entity and ontology memories, and every final URI is guaranteed to exist in the KG.
- **Answer refusal:** if any required URI's top retrieval score falls below a confidence threshold, PGMR declines to answer, with no extra training. On LC-QuAD 2.0 with Llama 3.1 8B, a threshold of about 0.85 best balances refusal accuracy against SQM.
- **Memory robustness:** filling the entity memory with up to 9× irrelevant Wikidata distractors lowers SQM by only about 4% (Llama 3.1 8B, LC-QuAD 2.0).
- **Latency:** each retrieval takes about 0.0016 s and needs roughly 600MB of GPU memory, compared with about 0.9 s per LLM generation. The overhead therefore stays negligible even with one lookup per URI.
- **Limitation:** gains are smaller on QALD-10, where complex query structures and literals still trip up the LLM. Code and data are available at github.com/Lama-West/PGMR.
