## Summary
The paper introduces Speech-Singing Code-Switching (SCS) Synthesis. In this task, a single generated utterance moves between talking and singing, and the text alone decides where the switches happen. Existing systems either produce only one mode or, like Bark, need explicit switching tags. The authors present UniVocal, built on the CosyVoice 2 TTS backbone. It is trained with a two-stage curriculum: the first stage puts speech and singing into a shared representation space, and the second teaches automatic mode switching. Real SCS recordings are scarce, so the authors use LLMs to write mixed scripts with varied switching cues and voice them with the stage-1 model. They also release a multi-scenario test set, SCSBench. Semantic tokens lose pitch detail, so the model first predicts a fine-grained pitch token and then the content token, in a chain-of-thought style. UniVocal reports state-of-the-art switching accuracy on SCSBench and stays competitive on ordinary speech and singing benchmarks. This matters for expressive voice agents, storytelling and educational audio.

## Key points
- On SCSBench-Mixed, mode-switching F1 is 0.871 (objective) and 0.810 (subjective), beating cascaded baselines. Automatic scoring uses Gemini 2.5 Pro with in-context examples.
- The refined cent token works as follows:
  - Pitch is measured in cents relative to A4 (440 Hz).
  - It is folded into one octave, giving 1200 bins with at most 1 cent of quantization error.
  - Unvoiced frames get the token -1.
  - At each step, one cent token and one semantic token are generated.
- On about 30 minutes of real-world recordings, F1 is only 0.201 (versus 0.452 for the Gemini + Cosy2 + LeVo cascade). Adding one explicit cue phrase per sample raises it to 0.730, above that cascade's 0.691.
- Explicit trigger phrases and humming make switching reliable. Lyrics that rely only on implicit semantic cues often fail to trigger singing.
- Training data comes from LibriTTS and Suno-generated songs. The Suno singing data carries artifacts and lyric misalignment. Code and data are released on GitHub (FunAudioLLM/FunResearch) under a restrictive license.
