## Summary
No single open-source LLM wins on every task, so practitioners need a way to pick a good model for their own new task without testing every candidate. The authors treat this as a routing problem and train the router on per-sample results that benchmarks already produce. For each candidate LLM, a binary classifier predicts whether that model will answer a given input "correctly." Correctness is the metric itself for classification and QA, and a thresholded metric for generation tasks. The classifier is a k-nearest neighbors model over sentence-transformer embeddings of the inputs.

To rank models on a new task, the paper proposes three scores. One of them corrects for the likely weaker accuracy of these predictors on out-of-distribution data. The authors also link the approach to meta-learning.

Experiments use HELM and MixInstruct. Routing consistently beats always using the single best model. At test time it is cheap, because only the chosen LLM runs. The main remaining obstacle is generalizing to tasks far from the benchmark data.

## Key points
- The evaluation covers 29 HELM datasets (QA, text classification, knowledge, reasoning) plus MixInstruct, which tests instruction following.
- Unlike rankers such as the one in Jiang et al. (2023), or FrugalGPT's sequential calls, the router uses only the input. It never needs outputs from every candidate LLM.
- Routing among models of at most 13B parameters can match Llama 2 70B on HELM. This requires scores S1/S2 plus a few labeled target samples (α = 0.04, about 2–40 examples).
- Routing quality, measured as the Pearson correlation between S3 scores and true accuracies, nears 1 when a new task is close to the benchmark data. It drops for distant tasks.
- On MixInstruct, selections get closer to the oracle as test points get closer to the reference set. This suggests that adding more benchmarks should improve routing.
