## Summary
The study asks how King Alfred's Old English translation of Boethius' *Consolation of Philosophy* names the faculties of human cognition, and whether those names map in any orderly way onto Boethius' Latin vocabulary. Modern dictionary glosses for terms such as *gescead*, *mod*, *andgi(e)t*, *gewitt* and *gesceadwisnes* overlap heavily. Šileikytė therefore reads each term in its own passages, compares it with the corresponding Latin, and places it within the Neoplatonic hierarchy of cognition reconstructed by Magee (1989): *sensus*, *imaginatio*, *ratio*, *intellegentia*.

She finds no one-to-one correspondence between the two term sets. The Old English still preserves the essential structure of Boethius' thought. Alfred appears to divide the single Latin *ratio* into two words:
- *gewitt* is the stable, basic human capacity to reason.
- *gescead* is reason that lifts the soul toward God.

This shows that a ninth-century vernacular could carry Late Antique philosophical distinctions. It also reframes the Old English semantic field of mind as structured rather than chaotic.

## Key points
- The corpus is the Old English *Boethius*, produced at the court of Alfred the Great (850–899), cited from Sedgefield's 1968 edition. It was the first vernacular rendering of the *Consolation*.
- The starting passage is Metre 20, Alfred's version of the hymn *O qui perpetua* (Cons. III m.9).
  - In it the soul exists on three levels: within itself, raised above itself, and sunk below itself among earthly things.
  - The ascent happens through *gescead*.
  - This passage has no direct line in the Latin original.
- Earlier treatments were Otten (1964) and Godden (1985). Both noted mismatches between the Latin and Old English terminology but did not explain them. Otten treated *mod* as a very broad term covering both 'spirit' and 'soul', and *sawol* as the term carrying religious colouring.
- In Bo 5.13 Alfred states that trouble can unsettle the *mod* but cannot take away *gewitt*, so *gewitt* ranks higher in stability. Ulysses' companions, though turned into beasts, still keep their *gewitt*.
- The author suggests an Augustinian/Plotinian split between lower soul and intuitive spirit motivated Alfred's two-way rendering of *ratio*.

## Interesting ideas
- Fix a word's sense from its actual contexts and from its aligned source-language equivalent, not from overlapping dictionary glosses
- Near-synonyms can be told apart by their rank in a hierarchy, shown by contrasts like "X can be shaken, Y cannot"
- One source term may split into two target terms depending on what the context highlights, as with *ratio* becoming *gewitt* versus *gescead*
- Flag passages in a translation that have no counterpart in the source, and treat them as possibly drawn from a separate source such as a commentary
- Model cognition as a ladder of levels (sense, imagination, reason, intellect), with broader terms acting as umbrellas over lower levels

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (frames): sense choice for verbs and nouns feeding VerbNet roles could be justified by the context pattern that triggered it, keeping the decision explainable rather than gloss-matched.
- **I2** (world): the ontology layer could store ordering relations between near-synonymous mental-state concepts, mined from contrastive sentences, instead of treating them as equivalent.
- **I3** (back): translation through the meta-world should choose among target lexemes by the semantic features in the graph, not by a fixed word-to-word table.
- **I4** (learn): when aligning silver data or LLM-teacher outputs with inputs, unmatched content could be flagged as added material rather than silently accepted.
- **I5** (world): a layered schema for perception and thinking verbs would let the world model track what a character senses versus infers, supporting explainable answers about belief.
