## Summary
Strong text embeddings are usually built on encoders with bidirectional attention. Recent work adapting autoregressive LMs for embeddings typically switches them to bidirectional attention and often adds extra training. This paper asks whether that change is really needed. The authors propose **echo embeddings**. The input is fed to the model twice, with a prompt asking it to repeat or rewrite the text, and token representations are pooled only from the second copy. Because the second copy can attend to the whole first copy, every pooled token carries context from the full input, even under a causal mask.

A synthetic toy dataset shows that classical mean or last-token pooling fails when the decisive information may sit early or late in the text, while echo embeddings handle both cases. On MTEB, the method improves zero-shot quality without any fine-tuning. It also slightly outperforms bidirectionally converted models after supervised fine-tuning, including under matched compute. The result suggests one unchanged LM architecture could serve both generation and embedding.

## Key points
- **Method:** the prompt has the form "rewrite the sentence: x; rewritten sentence: x", and embeddings are mean- or last-token pooled from the second occurrence of x. It needs no architecture changes and no training.
- **Zero-shot results:**
  - Echo embeddings beat classical LM embeddings by about 5%.
  - They come close to bidirectional conversion plus unsupervised MLM training (BehnamGhader et al., 2024).
  - They clearly beat the PromptEOL baseline and are less sensitive to prompt wording.
- **Toy analysis:** on synthetic data with two opposite structures (S1, S2) generated with GPT-4, classical embeddings from Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.1 are no better than random overall. Echo embeddings solve the task.
- **Fine-tuned Mistral-7B on MTEB (56 datasets, with instructions):**
  - Echo reaches 64.68 average (last-token) and 64.22 (mean).
  - Classical reaches 63.98 and 62.96 respectively.
- **Cost and fairness:** repetition doubles sequence length, so the authors also report compute-matched results for both training and inference. The gains shrink under these settings but remain.
