## Summary
Stempel argues that Semitic linguistics has long neglected the "injunctive," a category introduced to the field by F. Rundgren. He defines it as a finite verb form that carries person and number but no tense or mood. The paper is a short typological and diachronic essay written in homage to Andrzej Zaborski, not a corpus or computational study. The author starts from Vedic, where the bare form *bharat* stands between the present *bharati* and the augmented past *abharat*. He explains this with Kuryłowicz's principle: when a new form takes over a morpheme's main job, the old form survives only in its leftover uses. He then maps the pattern onto Semitic. Arabic *yaqtulu* versus *yaqtul* closely mirrors the Vedic pair. Hebrew, Aramaic, Ethiopic and Akkadian obscured or reshaped the same opposition. Modern Armenian and Geʿez independently created new injunctives. The main claim is that a form can only be defined by the oppositions it enters, so one form may serve quite different functions across languages and periods.

## Key points
- In Vedic, the unaugmented present-stem form without the "here-and-now" particle *-i* survives in prohibitions such as *mā bharat* and in timeless statements. Classical Sanskrit, Old Persian and later Greek lost it.
- The Arabic jussive/apocopate appears after particles that already supply tense or mood: *lā* (prohibitive), *lam* and *lammā* (negated past and "not yet"), and *li-* (wish). The verb itself therefore stays unmarked.
- West Semitic once had the same contrast, but sound change hid it:
  - Hebrew and Aramaic lost final syllables under a prehistoric penultimate stress, though relics remain in the jussive and in *wayyāqom*.
  - Ethiopic merged *i* and *u* into *ə*.
- Akkadian turned the short form *iprus* into a preterite once the new present *iparras* emerged.
- In Modern Armenian, periphrastic *berum em* replaced the old indicative, so *berem* now covers the subjunctive and the future with *k-*.
  - Geʿez is parallel: the old indicative became the "subjunctive," and the reduplicated D-stem became the new indicative.
  - Geʿez *yəqattəl* matches Akkadian *uparris*, not *iparras*.

## Interesting ideas
- The paper defines a form only by what it lacks: not present, not past, not indicative. Its meaning comes entirely from its contrasts, never from an intrinsic label. — For Mova (tokens): The English bare verb could get underspecified Mood/Tense features instead of a forced guess, with the value resolved later from context.
- When a negator or particle already encodes tense or modality, the verb can afford to be uninformative. Interpreters should therefore read temporal meaning off the whole construction, not the verb alone. — For Mova (frames): Tense and polarity for "did not kill," "let him go," or "don't" should be taken from the auxiliary or particle and attached to the frame, with the bare head verb left neutral.
- Kuryłowicz's rule says that when a new form takes over the main function, the old form keeps only its secondary uses. This explains why one shape ends up serving scattered, seemingly unrelated roles. — For Mova (tree): When converting between UD dialects or eras, a single surface form should be mapped to different feature sets per construction, rather than with one global rule.
- Lost distinctions can be recovered from relics, such as Hebrew stress placement showing a vanished final syllable. Indirect evidence can thus testify to structure that is invisible on the surface. — For Mova (learn): Repair rules could use indirect cues, such as agreement or word order, to restore a category that a tagger dropped, and then check the restoration against negative controls.
- Periphrasis displaces older synthetic forms, as Armenian "I am bearing" became the plain present. — For Mova (back): Generation could keep a table that maps each meaning to its current periphrastic or synthetic realisation, so that output picks the contemporary form for a tense.
