## Summary
Security teams using endpoint protection face far more alerts than they can review. Even a precise detector of obfuscated command-lines raises many alerts, and many of them are near-identical variants or benign but syntactically complex commands. The authors, from Cisco, add a post-processing stage between the detector and alert creation. First, command-lines are normalized by replacing dates, URLs, GUIDs and IPs with placeholders. They are then embedded with Sentence-BERT (all-MiniLM-L6-v2) and grouped using hierarchical agglomerative clustering. Each cluster gets one real command-line as its representative. A zero-shot LLM then judges whether that representative is truly obfuscated, so false-positive clusters are dropped. The evaluation used real telemetry from a commercial product: three manually labeled days plus one unlabeled week. Across that week, alert volume fell by about 98%, and clusters stayed pure and coherent. Because the LLM only sees one representative per cluster, its cost grows with the number of clusters rather than raw detections. This makes the approach practical for high-volume operational settings.

## Key points
- **Clustering setup:** HAC with average linkage over cosine distances, distance threshold 0.3 and minimum cluster size 1. The representative is the member with the smallest Levenshtein distance to the cluster's longest common subsequence (LCS).
- **Data:** The detector produces about 1,400 flags daily. 4,432 instances from three days were hand-labeled (two days for development, one held out), and an additional unlabeled week was used for label-free evaluation. The data is not public because it contains sensitive customer information.
- **Alert reduction:** An average of 1,207 daily detections became about 67 clusters and then about 23 final alerts, a reduction of roughly 98% that held steady across the week.
- **Cluster quality:** Label purity was 100% on the labeled subset, and the mean silhouette score was 0.82. A new LLM-based coherence metric rates each cluster on a 1–5 scale, where lower is better, and scores fell mostly in the low-to-mid range.
- **Cluster sizes:** On a typical day, about 31 clusters were singletons and fewer than 8 had more than 10 members. The largest cluster held 1,061 command-lines and had an average coherence score of 2.
