## Summary
Studies that rely on data from human participants must satisfy two demands that often conflict. Open Science and FAIR principles push for sharing data, while the GDPR and similar laws restrict how personal data may be collected and reused. To help researchers handle both, the authors propose a framework composed of modular parts called RUDI (Research-centered User-oriented Data Infrastructure), developed at Bielefeld University's CRC 1646 by legal, linguistic and technical experts. This paper presents its first component, a web-based consent wizard.

The wizard asks researchers questions about their study and maps the answers onto legally relevant properties. From these, it assembles tailored participant information and consent forms. Legal knowledge is stored in configuration templates written with legal experts. This keeps the logic separate from the code and makes it easier to update when legislation changes.

The main result is a working stand-alone prototype rather than an empirical evaluation. It matters because it lowers the administrative work of GDPR-compliant consent and is designed to extend beyond linguistics. The authors also discuss using a standardised ontology to place data within its research domain.

## Key points
- The architecture relies on three configurable templates:
  - a set of study properties, such as GDPR personal-data processing, permitted age groups and need for guardian consent;
  - form-step instructions that show or hide questions conditionally;
  - autofill rules that set and lock properties according to legal constraints.
- Guardian consent is set and locked automatically for participants under 14. It also applies to participants under 18 if the study involves special risks to their mental or physical well-being. In these cases, extra forms for guardians are added to the output.
- Output documents are generated from XML document templates supplied by a legal expert. Researchers see a live preview and can download the finished forms as PDF once their answers are complete and valid.
- The interface design follows Nielsen's ten usability heuristics, and development is iterative with continuous user feedback. The wizard is available at purl.org/crc1646/RUDI-wizard.
- Planned next steps include an online database and user management. These would let participants sign forms directly or consent only partially (for example, opting out of publication or third-party sharing). They would also allow researchers to share study templates and would link consent records to an open metadata repository.
