## Summary
Dynamic retrieval-augmented generation lets an LLM fetch external documents several times while it writes. Each step must settle two questions: when retrieval should fire and what query to send. The authors argue that earlier systems answer both poorly. They trigger retrieval on fixed schedules, such as every sentence or every few tokens, and they build queries only from the latest sentence or the last tokens.

DRAGIN replaces both choices with two signals taken from the model itself:
- **RIND** decides when to retrieve. It scores each generated token using three factors: entropy-based uncertainty, the strongest attention later tokens pay to it, and whether it carries meaning.
- **QFS** decides what to retrieve. It uses self-attention over the whole context to pick the tokens that best express the model's current knowledge gap.

The framework works with any Transformer LLM and needs no training, fine-tuning or prompt design. On four knowledge-intensive benchmarks with three LLMs, DRAGIN beat existing dynamic RAG methods on every dataset. This shows that the model's internal states are a useful guide for adaptive retrieval.

## Key points
- **Benchmarks:** four knowledge-intensive generation datasets, including HotpotQA, 2WikiMultihopQA and IIRC. Three LLMs were tested, among them LLaMA2-13B-Chat.
- **Query formulation ablation:** retrieval timing was fixed to RIND, and the LLaMA2-13B-Chat setting was compared. QFS reached EM 0.314, ahead of FLARE (0.262), full context (0.252), FS-RAG (0.255) and FL-RAG (0.241). Using the full context as the query did not help, which points to redundancy in it.
- **Threshold sensitivity:** on HotpotQA, results stayed stable across different RIND threshold values. A higher threshold reduces how often retrieval fires, which lets users trade accuracy against speed.
- **Retriever comparison:** with LLaMA2-13B-Chat, lexical BM25 outperformed dense SGPT on all three tested datasets. For example, HotpotQA EM was 0.314 vs 0.264.
- **Limitation and availability:** the method requires access to attention scores, so it cannot run on closed APIs. Code, data and models are released at github.com/oneal2000/DRAGIN.
