## Summary
The paper looks at the internal hidden states of LLMs and reports a strange phenomenon. A tiny handful of scalar activations, often fewer than ten among tens of millions, reach magnitudes thousands to tens of thousands of times above the typical value. The authors call these "massive activations." They examine many model families, including LLaMA2, Mixtral-8x7B, Phi-2, MPT and GPT-2, using 100 RedPajama sequences of 4,096 tokens each. For each model they locate the spikes by layer, feature dimension and token position. Intervention experiments show the values are almost constant across inputs and behave like built-in bias terms. Removing them breaks the model, while replacing them with their average leaves it intact. The spikes also pull attention toward their tokens, which explains "attention sinks." Adding explicit key/value bias terms to self-attention removes the need for these spikes. Similar effects appear in Vision Transformers, which gives a new reading of register tokens. The work matters for LLM quantization and compression, and for interpretability.

## Key points
- A working definition: an activation counts as massive if its magnitude exceeds 100 and is roughly 1,000× the median of its hidden state. In LLaMA2-70B such values can surpass 15,000.
- In LLaMA2-7B the spikes sit in feature dimensions 1415 and 2533, on the first token and the first "." or "\n". They appear abruptly at layer 2 and stay nearly constant until about layer 30. LLaMA2-13B uses dims 2100 and 4743 on the starting token only. Mixtral-8x7B uses dims 2070 and 3398.
- In LLaMA2-7B, zeroing just four massive activations causes performance to collapse. Setting them to their mean values causes no harm.
- Training a small GPT-2 with explicit attention key/value biases eliminates massive activations. Scaling this up is left as future work.
- In DINOv2-reg ViTs, fixing register features to their means preserves ImageNet accuracy (ViT-G: 87.0 vs 87.0). This suggests registers act as learned biases.
