## Summary

Existing chart-to-code benchmarks such as ChartMimic and Plot2Code are close to saturation: GPT-4o already scores above 80 on ChartMimic. They also mostly test simple reproduction, not the editing and raw-data plotting that users actually need. The authors address this with Chart2Code, a benchmark where a large multimodal model (LMM) must write executable Python plotting code. Its input is a reference chart, a natural-language instruction and, optionally, data supplied as raw text, a spreadsheet screenshot or a structured file such as Excel.

Tasks are organized into three levels of rising difficulty:

* **Level 1:** reproducing a chart.
* **Level 2:** editing a chart, e.g., switching the chart type or adding elements.
* **Level 3:** building a faithful chart from a long, unprocessed table.

Evaluation combines code-level scoring with assessment of the rendered image. Across 29 proprietary and open-source LMMs, models handle reproduction reasonably well but degrade sharply on editing and long-table tasks. Producing plausible code proves far easier than producing a visually faithful chart. The benchmark therefore exposes practical gaps that earlier, saturated benchmarks hide.

## Key points

- Chart2Code contains 2,186 tasks covering 22 chart types. Code and data are publicly released.
- The 29 evaluated LMMs include GPT-5.2, Gemini-3-Pro, Claude-Sonnet-4, Qwen3-VL, InternVL3/3.5, MiMo-VL and Seed-1.6-VL.
- On Level 2 editing, the strongest model, GPT-5.2, averages 72.21 on code-based metrics but only 33.41 on chart-quality (LMM-score) assessment.
- On Level 3, leading models obtain solid code-level scores (Gemini-3-Pro: 84.00 visual, 96.60 type). Their chart-level scores, however, stay roughly between 16 and 36. The main error sources are data extraction, style, layout and axes.
- Limitations: all tasks are in English only, and scoring relies on LLM/LMM judges, which may be biased; human comparison studies are provided in the paper's appendix.
