## Summary
The authors describe their entry to the ArAIEval 2023 shared task, which targets two problems in Arabic text where far fewer tools exist than for English. Subtask 1A is a yes/no decision on whether a tweet or news paragraph uses persuasion (propaganda) techniques. Task 2 looks at tweets: 2A flags disinformation, and 2B sorts it into hate speech, offensive content, rumor or spam.

Their system ensembles four classifiers, all built on BERT Arabic Base:
- one trained with a supervised contrastive objective;
- one fine-tuned directly on the task with cross-entropy;
- one first adapted on XNLI with relabeled classes and then fine-tuned on the task;
- one that turns sentence embeddings into cosine-similarity scores against positive and negative example sentences, passed through GELU.

An ablation compares baselines, pairs of components and the full ensemble. The full combination wins on both binary tasks, gaining about 4 F1 points on persuasion and about 3 on disinformation over plain Arabic-BERT. The work matters as a practical recipe for low-resource propaganda and disinformation detection, though the gains come at the cost of compute and interpretability.

## Key points
- **Backbone and baselines.** Every component uses BERT Arabic Base (Safaya et al., 2020). Baselines are Arabic-BERT and a sentiment-tuned ArSAS BERT checkpoint.
- **Subtask 1A results.** Micro-F1 rises from 72.23 (Arabic-BERT) and 73.4 (ArSAS BERT) to 76.14 for Model (A+B+C+D). Macro-F1 reaches 76.82.
- **Subtask 2A results.** Micro-F1 goes from 86.4 to 89.67 with the full ensemble, and macro-F1 reaches 89.93. Model (A+D) is the strongest pair at 89.38.
- **Subtask 2B results.** Only B and B+D are reported, at 80.36 and 80.71 micro-F1. This is a small gain.
- **Class balance shift in Task 1.** The development set is roughly 78% non-propaganda and 22% propaganda. The test set is about 34.2% versus 65.8%, so the class balance nearly flips.

## Interesting ideas
- An existing NLI corpus (XNLI) is repurposed as an intermediate training step by merging entailment and neutral into one class and keeping contradiction as the other, which gives a cheap binary pretraining signal before the real task.
- One component scores an input by how close it is to positive versus negative reference sentences, so its decision can be traced to concrete exemplars rather than opaque weights.
- The ablation reports baselines, every useful pair of components and the full ensemble, which shows which parts actually add value (A+D beats A+B here).
- The persuasion data has very different class proportions in the development and test sets, a reminder that a threshold tuned on one split may be miscalibrated on another.
- A contrastive loss pulls same-label examples together and pushes different-label examples apart in embedding space, which sharpens class boundaries when data is scarce.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (learn): Mova could relabel public NLI data into "compatible vs. contradicts" pairs to pre-train a checker that tests whether a new sentence clashes with the current world of the text.
- **I2** (frames): speech-act or irony decisions in prag could fall back on nearest labeled exemplar frames and report "closest to example X" as part of the explanation.
- **I3** (learn): when Mova combines witness parsers or repair rules, it could publish pairwise and leave-one-out scores to show that each witness earns its place.
- **I4** (learn): evaluation runs could log label priors per split and include a prior-shifted negative control, so that gains are not artifacts of class balance.
- **I5** (tree): gparse could add a contrastive term over arc or label representations to better separate confusable dependency relations in small treebanks.
