## Summary
This paper describes a system for Task B of the Qur'an QA 2023 shared task. The system receives a passage of consecutive Qur'anic verses and a question in Modern Standard Arabic. It must return up to ten ranked answer spans copied directly from the passage, or nothing when the passage contains no answer. The data is QRCD v1.2, and scoring uses partial Average Precision (pAP).

The authors use two extractive readers: the original AraELECTRA and an AraELECTRA fine-tuned on ArTyDiQA. They also try AraElectra-ARCD as a substitute for the first reader. From each reader they collect per-token start and end logits. A small decision module, either an MLP or an LSTM, then selects the best start-end pair. It works either on each reader's logits separately or on a fusion of both readers' logits.

Fusing logits through the MLP gave the best development scores, up to 0.442 pAP. However, the only test figure reported is 0.474, for the ArTyDiQA reader alone. The work suggests that lightweight late fusion of span scores can help in a small, specialised domain.

## Key points
- QRCD v1.2 contains 1,155 question-passage pairs and 1,399 question-passage-answer triplets, split roughly 70/10/20 into train, dev and test. About 15% of the questions have no answer.
- The pAP metric gives partial credit for partly overlapping and lower-ranked spans. A question with no answer earns full credit only if the system returns an empty result, and zero otherwise.
- The readers are AraELECTRA (Model 1), AraELECTRA fine-tuned on ArTyDiQA (Model 2) and AraElectra-ARCD (the Hugging Face checkpoint salti/AraElectra-base-finetuned-ARCD).
- Development pAP scores were:
  - Model 1: 0.367
  - Model 2: 0.406
  - Fused logits with the LSTM branch: 0.411
  - Fused logits with the MLP branch: 0.435
  - AraElectra-ARCD + AraELECTRA fused with the MLP: 0.442
- Model 2 scored 0.474 pAP on the test set. No test scores are given for the fused systems because the test set was unavailable to the authors. They name the small size of QRCD as a main limitation.

## Interesting ideas
- Instead of picking one reader, the boundary scores of two readers are merged and a tiny learned layer chooses the final span, which is a cheap ensemble that needs no retraining of the large models
- Abstention is a first-class outcome, because unanswerable questions are rewarded only when the system stays silent, so over-answering is directly penalised
- Ranked answers are graded with partial overlap rather than exact match, so a near-miss span still earns some credit and the ranking order matters
- Before facing a tiny specialised dataset, the reader is first adapted on a larger general QA set in the same language (ArTyDiQA), and this variant was the strongest single model

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (answer): Mova's tale and fable readers could combine span or entity candidates from several independent routes (tree-based, frame-based) with a small transparent scorer whose weights stay inspectable.
- **I2** (learn): evaluation suites could include deliberately unanswerable questions as negative controls, so a reader that invents answers loses points.
- **I3** (answer): school-test and QA scoring could adopt a pAP-style measure, separating "found roughly the right phrase" from "found nothing".
- **I4** (learn): when teaching a new domain with few gold examples, Mova could first train on broader silver QA data and then refine on the small in-domain set.
