## Summary
Chain-of-Thought prompting helps LLMs solve multi-step problems, but the intermediate rationales often contain invented facts or fail to support the final answer. Wang et al. address this with Chain-of-Knowledge (CoK) prompting. In-context exemplars teach the model to first list structured evidence as (subject, relation, object) triples (CoK-ET), then give a short textual explanation (CoK-EH), and only then answer. To build exemplars, the authors sample K labeled questions, draft rationales with zero-shot CoT, retrieve related triples from an external knowledge base, and manually annotate the evidence. A follow-up F²-Verification step scores each response on two dimensions. Factuality measures how well the triples match ground-truth knowledge. Faithfulness measures how consistent the evidence, explanation and answer are. Responses scoring below a reliability threshold are returned to the model with the faulty evidence flagged so it can rethink. On commonsense, factual, symbolic and arithmetic benchmarks, CoK with verification outperforms standard ICL and CoT. It also stacks with self-consistency, which makes reasoning more checkable and easy to plug into existing prompting setups.

## Key points
- Benchmarks include CSQA, StrategyQA, OpenBookQA, ARC-c, Sports, BoolQ, GSM8K and Last Letter Connection. Backbones are text-davinci-002, gpt-3.5-turbo and gpt-4.
- Compared with CoT and CoT+SC, CoK and CoK+SC improve accuracy by about 1.6% on text-davinci-002, 1.4% on gpt-3.5-turbo and 1.0% on gpt-4 on average.
- Ablations show that dropping evidence triples hurts more than dropping explanation hints. Even fully random (wrong) triples in the demonstrations lower accuracy only slightly. GSM8K exemplars still work for commonsense tasks.
- Rethinking yields most of its gains within the first 3 iterations. Thresholds θ below 0.25 can cost roughly 2% because too much irrelevant knowledge gets injected.
- SimCSE served best as the faithfulness scorer, compared with FactCC and Knowledge F1. Code and data are available at github.com/wjn1996/Chain-of-Knowledge.
