## Summary
The paper tackles how to choose the best summaries when distilling large language models into a compact summarizer. In contrastive training such as BRIO, candidate summaries must be ranked. ROUGE captures only surface overlap, and LLM-based rankers like GPTRank produce inconsistent, position-biased judgments. The authors propose SCURank, which scores each candidate by the information it contains rather than asking an LLM for a direct ranking. It works in three steps:
- gpt-4o-mini breaks every candidate into Summary Content Units, following the SGU approach of Nawrath et al.
- The units are embedded with all-mpnet-base-v2 and clustered with HDBSCAN.
- Each unit is weighted by how many candidates share its cluster, and a summary's score is the length-normalized sum of its unit weights.

The ranked candidates, drawn from several different LLMs, are used to train BART with BRIO. On CNN/DailyMail and XSum, SCURank-trained models beat ROUGE- and LLM-ranked baselines. Using diverse LLM sources also made outputs more abstractive. The work shows that a stable, information-focused ranker improves small distilled summarizers.

## Key points
- **Pipeline:** gpt-4o-mini (1-shot, REALSumm example) extracts SCUs, all-mpnet-base-v2 embeds them, HDBSCAN clusters them, and cluster size sets each unit's importance. The LLM is used only for extraction, never for comparing summaries.
- **Baselines and data:** compared against ROUGE, BERTScore, BLANC and GPTRank on CNN/DailyMail and XSum, using a BART student trained with BRIO. The setup mirrors GPTRank: one reference plus eight candidates.
- **Human evaluation:** 30 articles per dataset were each rated by 3 MTurk annotators. SCURank models scored higher on Faithfulness, Conciseness and Completeness, with Completeness gains significant at p \< 0.01 on both datasets.
- **LLM judges:** Grok-4, Claude-4-sonnet and Gemini-2.5-pro each compared outputs twice with the order swapped. All three preferred SCURank-trained models over GPTRank-trained ones.
- **Abstractiveness:** on CNN/DailyMail, the SCURank model trained on nine-LLM data (LLMs-9) cut density from 10.34 to 6.73 versus BASE. This narrows the gap to human-written summaries (2.07) and LLM-generated ones (2.70). Code: github.com/IKMLab/SCURank.
