## Summary
Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) involves a trade-off. Low-rank adapters such as LoRA add many trainable weights and need rank and scale settings. Cheap representation editors such as RED apply one transformation to every token and miss token-level context. The authors observe that the per-token optimal scaling and bias vectors in a layer group into a few recurring patterns. A small set of editors could therefore cover them.

TARE builds on this observation. After each FFN block of a frozen transformer, a small selector scores a pool of diagonal editors, each a per-dimension scale and bias. For every token, it keeps the top-k editors and blends their outputs with softmax weights. The authors stress that this is not a mixture-of-experts adapter, and the only settings are n and k.

TARE was tested on LLaMA-3-8B for knowledge and math reasoning and on RoBERTa-base/large for GLUE. It matches or beats LoRA, DoRA, MiLoRA, LoReFT and RED while training only 0.0392% of parameters with about 20 GiB of peak memory. This makes it attractive for low-budget adaptation.

## Key points
- **Averages:** 86.7% on eight knowledge tasks (BoolQ, PIQA, SIQA, HellaSwag, WinoGrande, ARC-e, ARC-c, OBQA), against LoReFT 86.6, LoRA 80.8 and RED 80.2. It reaches 76.7% on seven math tasks (incl. GSM8K, SVAMP, AQuA) and 88.3% on GLUE. Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct was also evaluated on the math tasks.
- **Default configuration:** n=8 editors, Top-k=3, with an optional load-balancing loss. Raising k from 1 to 3 lifts the math average from 71.2 to 76.7, and larger k gives no further gain.
- **Placement ablation:** inserting at the FFN down projection is the best compromise. Placing editors at the up projection costs 0.1369% of parameters and about 29.6 GiB of memory.
- **Data efficiency:** with Math-10K, accuracy grows smoothly from 69.8 with 500 examples to 76.7 with the full 9,919 examples.
- **Limitations and code:** routing may collapse or use editors unevenly, and diagonal edits limit expressivity. Code is at github.com/PatriciaPulec/tare.
