## Summary
Language-model vulnerability detectors often flag benign code. They notice a risky operation but cannot confirm whether surrounding guards actually block exploitation. VulAgent addresses this by modeling the workflow of human code auditors. Each suspicion becomes an explicit, falsifiable hypothesis that must pass evidence checks before it is reported.

The pipeline has three stages:
1. **Discovery.** A MetaAgent dispatches role-specialized analyzers. This stage aims for high recall and merges duplicate findings by CWE and sink line.
2. **Hypothesis construction.** A TriggerPlannerAgent states the preconditions for the vulnerability and a candidate source-to-sink trigger path.
3. **Validation.** The conditions and then the path are checked against project context and general knowledge of APIs and security patterns.

The approach was evaluated on PrimeVul and SVEN against recent LLM-based baselines. VulAgent raises accuracy and identifies far more vulnerable–fixed pairs. It also cuts false positives by roughly a third. The value is practical: separating discovery from validation makes reports more trustworthy and lowers triage effort, though it requires more inference tokens.

## Key points
- Measured against recent LLM baselines on the PrimeVul and SVEN benchmarks, VulAgent:
  - raises accuracy by an average of 6.6 percentage points;
  - finds up to 4.5× more vulnerable–fixed pairs (2.46× on average);
  - lowers false positive rate by about 36% relative.
- The architecture combines a MetaAgent with always-on StaticAnalyzerAgent, BehaviorAnalyzerAgent and MemoryLayoutAgent, plus specialized analyzers. It then uses a TriggerPlannerAgent and two validation steps: hypothesis conditions, then hypothesis path.
- In an experiment where oracle labels are supplied as candidate reports, VulAgent reaches an FPR of 20.48%. This compares with 49.40% for direct CoT judgment and 39.76% for VulTrial. Accuracy stays close to direct CoT (61.45 vs 62.05).
- The main cost is output length: about 7,037 output tokens per sample, versus about 3,119 for VulTrial and 2,264 for GPTLens.
- Code and resources are released at github.com/HotFrom/VulAgent.
