## Summary
Practical natural language interfaces to databases need two things: fast answers and easy transfer to new domains. Warren and Pereira present Chat-80, a prototype question answering system for a deliberately restricted English subset, written entirely in Prolog. It extends earlier work by Dahl (a Spanish system) and Colmerauer. Questions are parsed with extraposition grammars (XGs) and translated into the Prolog subset of first-order logic. Determiners become standard quantifiers rather than Colmerauer's three-branched quantifiers (3BQs), and presuppositions are deliberately ignored. A planning stage then restructures the logical form, much like query optimisation in relational databases, and the resulting Prolog code is executed to obtain the answer. On a world geography database, most single-sentence queries, including fairly complex ones, need far less than a second of CPU time to answer. The authors find that answering, not parsing, dominates processing cost. They argue that storing domain knowledge as separate declarative data makes the system easier to adapt than procedural designs such as LUNAR.

## Key points
- Chat-80 has three stages: English is translated into logic, planning turns the logic into efficient Prolog, and execution produces the answer. It runs under DEC-10 Prolog.
- The test database covers more than 150 countries, plus oceans, major seas, rivers and cities. The largest relation, `borders`, holds over 850 tuples.
- System sizes in Prolog clauses and DEC-10 words:
  - NL analysis: about 580 clauses, 24,000 words.
  - Planning and execution: about 290 clauses, 8,500 words.
  - Geographical vocabulary: about 180 clauses, 4,000 words.
  - Geographical database: about 1,590 clauses, 22,500 words.
  - Roughly 50 additional words are domain independent.
- Compared with the original Chat (based on metamorphosis grammars), Chat-80 changes several things:
  - It uses new determiner semantics and scoping rules.
  - It adds query planning.
  - It covers more of English.
  - It performs analysis in three separate phases.
- Natural language analysis takes only a small share of total time for non-trivial queries. Extending the vocabulary barely affects speed because the dictionary is indexed.
