## Summary

This short poster paper reviews more than thirty years of the British National Corpus (BNC). The BNC is a 100-million-word reference corpus of late-20th-century British English. The authors draw lessons about representativeness, access, licensing, and how a "contemporary" corpus ages.

Academic and publishing partners built the BNC between 1991 and 1994, with funding from the UK Department of Trade and Industry. About 90% is written material, such as press, periodicals, books, letters and student essays. The other 10% is transcribed speech, including casual conversations recorded by demographically balanced volunteers. The corpus is encoded in TEI and tagged with CLAWS. Its tagging was later improved by retraining the tagger on a hand-corrected subset.

Access moved from a paid CD-ROM with Sara, to a DVD with Xaira, to free download from the Oxford Text Archive in 2014. The original licence still restricts full downloads to Oxford, so online platforms provide search-only access.

A comparable BNC2014 now exists. The authors therefore argue that the original should be renamed BNC1994 and treated as a historical resource. Its value lies in pre-internet, human-written language that predates machine-generated text. The paper is useful for planning national corpora meant to last for decades.

## Key points

- Composition: 100M words, about 90% written and 10% spoken. All texts carry TEI headers with classification and bibliographic metadata, and no texts have been added since 1994. Revised editions are BNC World (2001) and the BNC XML Edition (2007).
- Annotation: CLAWS POS tags were refined in the Tag Enhancement project at Lancaster (1995–1996). The manually annotated 2M-word BNC Sampler was used to retrain CLAWS, which then re-tagged the remaining ~98M words.
- Audio: a 2000s project recovered much of the spoken recordings, aligned them with the transcripts and streamed them (Audio BNC). One version of BNCWeb plays this audio alongside concordance lines.
- Licensing: whole-corpus download is permitted only from the University of Oxford. Platforms such as BNCWeb, English-Corpora.org and Sketch Engine offer analysis without text download. Unusually, the licence explicitly permits commercial use.
- Naming: following the release of Lancaster's BNC2014, the original corpus has been rebranded BNC1994. It is now positioned as a historical record of pre-internet native-speaker language.
